Chapter 5 - The Sanctuary of Shadows

Adrian walked toward her, his heavy steps soundless on the rug.
Claire didn't move away. She didn't flinch.
When he reached her, he stopped inches away. He reached out with a trembling hand, his thumb gently brushing against her jawline, checking her as if ensuring she hadn't been touched by Liam’s filth.
“Did he frighten you?” Adrian asked, his voice low, rough, and laced with lingering adrenaline.
“No,” Claire whispered, looking up into his dark eyes. “I knew you wouldn't let him touch me.”
Adrian stared at her face—at her soft skin, her full, dark eyes, her plump lips that were parted in a quiet gasp.
“You stood up to him,” Adrian murmured, his thumb sliding down her jaw to the side of her neck, feeling the rapid beat of her pulse. “You offered to throw boiling tea in the face of the most violent man in South Boston.”
“He threatened Lily,” Claire said simply, as if that explained everything. “And he insulted you.”
Adrian let out a quiet, ragged breath. He stepped even closer, his broad chest brushing against hers. For the first time, Claire didn't feel self-conscious about her size. She felt the way his gaze swept over her curves with intense, undeniable hunger.
“Claire,” he rasped, his voice thick with a confession he had fought for months. “Do you have any idea what you’re doing to me?”
“Mr. Mercer—”
“Adrian,” he commanded softly. “Call me Adrian.”
“Adrian...” she breathed.
He closed the distance between them.
His lips met hers in a deep, possessive, intoxicating kiss.
Claire let out a soft gasp against his mouth, her arms instinctively rising to wrap around his broad neck, her fingers burying themselves in his dark, thick hair. Adrian pulled her flush against his body, his large hands settling firmly over her soft hips, lifting her slightly off her feet as he deepened the kiss.
It wasn't a gentle kiss born of gratitude. It was a fierce, desperate collision of two lonely souls who had spent years surviving in the cold. He kissed her as if she were water and he were dying of thirst in a desert. His hands pressed into her flesh, claiming every curve, worshipping the soft weight of her body with a reverence that made her blood turn to molten fire.
When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against hers, both of them were breathing heavily.
“I’ve wanted to do that since the night I found you sleeping in my daughter’s bed,” Adrian confessed against her lips, his hands still gripping her waist tightly.
Claire’s heart soared, but a sudden shadow of fear touched her mind. “Adrian... your late wife... your world... I’m just a nanny. I don't fit into the high-society life you’re trying to build.”
Adrian pulled her even closer, his dark eyes burning with fierce conviction.
“Rebecca was my past, Claire,” he said firmly. “And high society can burn to the ground for all I care. You are the warmth in this house. You are the woman who brought my daughter back to life. You are my future... if you’ll have me.”
Before Claire could answer, a sudden, high-pitched alarm began to blare across the estate.
The red emergency lights in the corners of the ceiling began to flash, casting eerie crimson shadows across the library walls.
