Chapter 7 - Unraveling the Syndicate

By dawn, the estate was secure. Vincenzo’s tactical team had swept the grounds, capturing two more operatives hiding near the perimeter fence. Interrogation in the underground holding cells was swift; professional mercenaries hired by Chicago-based syndicates had zero loyalty once they realized the Moretti patriarch was willing to bypass the legal system entirely to protect his home.
The name dropped by the captured operatives was Victor Vance—no relation to the medical specialist, but an executive director within the syndicate’s financial arm who had orchestrated the entire smear-and-sabotage campaign against Lily’s rehabilitation.
Gabriel sat in his study once more, reviewing the confession transcripts printed on thick bond paper.
The puzzle pieces fit together with brutal clarity. Caldwell had been compromised by the syndicate years ago, buried under gambling debts and embezzlement investigations. They had used him to manipulate Lily’s medical records, ensuring she remained disabled while siphoning millions from Moretti endowments to fund their illegal operations.
When Emma’s unexpected intervention exposed the rigged braces on the security footage, it had triggered a panic at the institute. Fearing that Gabriel would uncover the entire criminal enterprise, the syndicate had authorized a wet-work extraction team to silence anyone who knew the truth—starting with the household staff and ending with Lily herself.
Gabriel closed the file folder and looked up as the heavy oak door of his study opened.
Emma walked in, carrying a fresh tray of coffee and a small plate of pastries. She had changed into a fresh blouse, her dark-blonde hair neatly pinned back, though dark circles beneath her eyes betrayed the terror of the previous night.
“You should be resting,” Gabriel said, standing up from his desk.
“I can’t sleep,” Emma admitted, setting the tray down on the corner of the desk. She looked at the classified security reports scattered across the blotter. “Is it over? Are the girls safe?”
“The men who tried to enter your nursery are currently answering questions in the basement,” Gabriel said bluntly. “Victor Vance is being hunted across three states by my security network. By nightfall, his syndicate will cease to exist.”
Emma shivered, pulling her cardigan tighter around her shoulders. “You live in a terrifying world, Mr. Moretti.”
“It’s the only world I’ve ever known,” Gabriel replied softly, walking around the desk until he stood just inches away from her. Up close, Emma had to tilt her head back to meet his dark, piercing gaze.
“When I hired you,” Gabriel continued, his voice dropping into a register that made the air between them feel charged, “I thought you were just another applicant looking for steady wages. I didn't know you would stand between an assassin and my daughter with a wooden broom.”
Emma’s cheeks flushed a soft, warm pink. She looked down at her hands. “Any mother—any person with a heart—would have done the same.”
May you like
“No,” Gabriel said, reaching out to gently lift her chin so her brown eyes met his. “Most people run. You fought.”
The silence that stretched between them was no longer filled with suspicion or corporate coldness. It was heavy with an unspoken understanding, a fragile bridge built across two entirely different worlds.
