Chapter 8 - The Breakthrough in the Sunroom

Two weeks after the night attack, the sunroom on the south side of the Moretti estate was flooded with golden afternoon light.

The Caldwell Institute had been permanently shuttered, its assets seized by federal authorities and redirected into pediatric research funds managed by independent trustees. Dr. Nathan Caldwell was awaiting trial in a federal penitentiary, alongside his co-conspirators.

In the sunroom, however, clinical terms and courtroom battles felt a million miles away.

Emma sat on the plush white rug, surrounded by colorful building blocks and stuffed animals. A few feet away stood Lily, wearing a simple pink dress and no heavy braces at all. Her lightweight, properly calibrated orthotic supports—prescribed by an honest pediatric specialist from Boston—rested against the wall, unused for the moment.

“Come on, Lily-bug,” Emma encouraged, holding her hands open wide. “Just like we practiced. Show your daddy how brave you are.”

Gabriel stood near the arched doorway, his broad shoulders leaning against the glass frame, holding a cup of cold black coffee. His dark eyes were fixed entirely on his younger daughter.

Lily took a deep breath. Her hazel eyes darted toward Gabriel, then back to Emma.

She let go of the small training walker.

Her right leg trembled slightly—the lingering result of years of artificial restriction—but her determination was absolute. She lifted her foot, took one step forward, and then a second.

Sophia cheered from the corner, clapping her hands. “ Yay, Lily! You did it!”

Lily smiled, her face lighting up with pure, unadulterated triumph, before she stumbled forward and collapsed right into Emma’s outstretched arms.

Emma laughed, catching her and spinning her around as Lily giggled with delight.

Gabriel set his coffee cup down on the windowsill. He crossed the room in long, silent strides, kneeling beside them on the rug. He didn't say a word. He simply reached out and pulled both Lily and Emma into his strong, protective embrace.

For the first time in three years, the cold, heavy armor that Gabriel Moretti wore around his soul fractured completely, letting the warm spring light in.
