Chapter 6 - The Sanctuary of Shadows

An hour later, the convoy pulled into the private iron gates of the Castellano Estate—a massive, high-security mansion situated on a cliff overlooking the dark ocean waters of Lake Michigan.
The estate looked like a fortress of glass, steel, and dark stone. Armed guards patrolled the perimeter with trained security dogs, but the moment Knox’s Maybach arrived, every guard stood at absolute attention, bowing their heads in deep respect.
Inside the estate’s private veterinary wing—a medical facility that rivaled most human hospitals—Caesar lay on an elevated orthopedic bed, hooked up to a warm IV drip and an oxygen monitor.
When Belle walked into the room, her face neatly bandaged by Knox’s personal surgeon, Caesar’s tail gave three distinct, heavy thuds against the mattress.
Belle immediately ran to his side, dropping to her knees and stroking his large gray muzzle. "Hey big guy... look at you. You're in a palace now."
Knox stood in the doorway, watching them.
For the past five years, his life had been defined by violence, corporate dominance, and revenge. His sister’s death had left a cold void inside his chest that no amount of wealth or power could fill. But watching this humble waitress comfort his dog under the warm light of his home felt like the first ray of sunshine after a ten-year storm.
Dr. Aris, Knox’s chief veterinary specialist, walked up to Knox, holding a medical clipboard.
"How is he?" Knox asked.
"He was severely malnourished and fighting a nasty bacterial infection, Mr. Castellano," Dr. Aris reported. "The kick from that cop broke two ribs, but thankfully no lung puncture. If he hadn't received saline and food over the last forty-eight hours... he wouldn't have survived the night."
Dr. Aris looked over at Belle. "That young lady literally kept him alive with her bare hands. She spent her own money buying saline solutions instead of eating."
Knox’s dark eyes shifted to Belle. "She won't ever have to worry about money again."
At that moment, Dante entered the room, holding a encrypted secure tablet. "Boss, we have an update from Crestwood."
Knox walked out into the private hallway, shutting the glass door gently so as not to disturb Caesar and Belle. "Report."
"Brock Harding has been arrested by federal agents for corruption, police brutality, and extortion," Dante said. "The Whitmore family’s assets have been completely seized by the banking commission. Veronica and Preston are facing twenty years in federal prison for financial fraud and conspiracy."
"And the diner?" Knox asked.
"Our legal team bought the entire 4th Street plot within ten minutes," Dante smiled thinly. "The land, the deep-water spring, and the entire district now belong exclusively to the Castellano Foundation."
Knox looked through the glass window into the recovery room. Belle was feeding Caesar small pieces of cooked chicken, her smile glowing despite the white bandages on her cheek.
"Dante," Knox said quietly.
"Yes, Boss?"
"Rebuild Ashford's Diner. I want it restored to twice its original size. Use the finest marble, the best kitchen equipment in the world, and put a golden sign above the door."
May you like
"What should the sign say, sir?"
Knox looked at his sister's collar sitting on the counter. "Tell them it says: Ashford’s Sanctuary. Protected by Caesar."
