Chapter 8 - The Guardian's Heart

Six months later.
The ocean breeze swept gently over 4th Street in Crestwood, carrying the sweet scent of fresh coffee, fried seafood, and blooming jasmine flowers.
Where the old, crumbling diner once stood now rose a stunning two-story building crafted from warm red brick, polished copper, and massive glass windows that overlooked the blue waters of the bay.
Above the entrance hung a massive carved wooden sign with golden lettering: ASHFORD'S DINER & SANCTUARY.
Inside, the diner was packed with happy customers. Local families, fishermen, and tourists filled the comfortable leather booths, enjoying the best seafood soup on the East Coast—prepared using Belle’s father's original recipe.
Gina, now the head kitchen manager, was smiling broadly as she slid plates of hot food across the stainless-steel pass.
In the center of the dining room, sitting on a massive, custom-built velvet bed, was Caesar.
The giant Neapolitan mastiff had become the unofficial mascot and guardian of Crestwood. Children walked up to him without fear, patting his soft, wrinkled head, while Caesar lazily thumped his heavy tail against the wooden floor, enjoying every bit of the love he was showered with.
At the corner table—the same table where Knox had first taken his seat months ago—sat Knox Castellano.
He had traded his dark suits for a dark blue dress shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. On the table lay an open laptop displaying corporate reports, but his eyes weren't on the screen.
His eyes were on Belle.
Belle was moving gracefully through the tables, laughing with an old couple, her face radiant, beautiful, and completely free of pain.
She walked over to Knox’s table, holding a fresh pot of hot black coffee. "Refill, Boss?" she teased with a gentle smile.
Knox looked up, a soft, genuine smile breaking across his handsome face—a smile his business partners back in Chicago would never believe existed.
"I told you not to call me Boss, Belle," Knox said softly, taking the coffee cup. "You own this place."
"I own the building," Belle smiled, sitting down across from him. "But you bought the heart."
Knox reached across the small table, taking her hand into his large, warm palm. "Caesar bought it first. I just followed him."

At the sound of his name, Caesar let out a soft, contented grunt from his velvet bed, stretching his heavy legs in the warm sunlight streaming through the window.
Through the glass, the ocean stretched out vast and calm under the blue sky. The dark storm that had threatened to destroy everything was gone, leaving behind a home built on courage, a bond forged in pain, and a guardian who would never let them fall again.
