Chapter 7 - The Reckoning of Crestwood

Three days later, the sun shone bright over the town of Crestwood, but the atmosphere in the town square was completely changed.

The corrupt dynasty that had ruled the town for two decades was dismantled in seventy-two hours. The local newspaper’s front page carried a massive headline: WHITMORE EMPIRE COLLAPSES; CHIEF OF POLICE FACES FEDERAL INDICTMENT.

Outside the Crestwood Courthouse, a crowd of local citizens had gathered. For years, these people had suffered under the extortion of Preston Whitmore and the violence of Brock Harding. Today, they watched in awe as federal agents led Preston and Veronica out in handcuffs, dressed in orange prison jumpsuits.

Veronica, her polished hair now matted and unwashed, spotted a black sedan parked across the street.

Standing beside the sedan was Knox Castellano, wearing a dark trench coat, his hand resting calmly on the leather leash of a massive Neapolitan mastiff.

Caesar was standing tall on four legs now, his fur shining, his chest broad, wearing his original black leather collar with the silver tag C.

Veronica stopped on the courthouse steps, her voice raspy as she screamed toward Knox. "You ruined us! You destroyed everything we built over a dirty dog!"

Knox didn't move. He didn't answer.

He simply looked at her with cold, terrifying indifference—the look a lion gives to an ant it has already crushed beneath its heel.

Beside Knox, Belle stepped out of the car.

She wore a simple, elegant dark blue dress provided by Knox's tailors. The burn on her cheek had healed remarkably well under advanced laser treatments, leaving only a faint, light pink mark that added a soft grace to her fierce eyes.

Veronica gasped when she saw Belle. "You... you miserable waitress..."

Belle walked up to the bottom of the courthouse steps, stopping three feet from Veronica. She didn't raise her hand. She didn't shout.

"My father built his diner with honest sweat," Belle said, her voice clear and strong, echoing across the quiet square. "You tried to burn it down with cruelty. But you forgot one thing, Veronica."

"What?" Veronica spat out bitterly.

"The world isn't owned by bullies," Belle said softly. "It's protected by those who care."

The federal agents shoved Veronica into the back of the transport van, slamming the doors shut and driving away into the distance.

The townspeople cheered. Old Ray, standing in the crowd with a small bandage on his forehead, clapped his hands until they turned red, tears of joy streaming down his weathered cheeks.

Belle turned back to Knox.

Knox offered her his hand. "Ready to see your new home, Belle?"
