Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Trap

By midnight, the mansion was shrouded in a heavy, eerie silence.
Upstairs in the nursery, I sat on the edge of Chloe’s bed in the dim glow of the nightlight. Both girls were finally asleep, exhausted from crying. Chloe was clutching a small knitted blanket I had brought from my own room to replace her lost bunny, her little thumb tucked into her mouth. Emma lay beside her, one arm thrown protectively over her sister's waist.
I stroked Emma's soft hair, my heart aching with an unbearable weight.
I had served the Vance family for five years. When Julian’s wife passed away years ago, he had been a broken man consumed by grief and the brutal demands of his underworld empire. I had stepped into this house when Chloe was just a newborn, bathing them, reading them bedtime stories, guarding them like they were my own blood.
Julian had paid me generously, protected my family, and treated me with a quiet, profound respect that few bosses ever showed.
And now, this viper was going to destroy everything.
A soft sound at the nursery door made me freeze.
I turned my head. The door pushed open slowly, and Victoria stepped into the dim room. She had changed into a black silk robe, holding a leather jewelry box in her hands.
"Follow me downstairs," Victoria whispered in a harsh, demanding tone. "Now."
I looked at the sleeping girls, then slowly stood up and followed her down the grand carpeted staircase into Julian’s private study.
The study was off-limits to everyone except Julian. Massive oak bookshelves lined the walls, and a heavy brass safe sat built into the wall behind his desk.
Victoria walked straight to the safe. To my absolute shock, she spun the dial with familiar ease and pulled the heavy door open. Inside lay stacks of emergency cash, legal deeds, and Julian’s late wife’s priceless diamond heirloom necklace—the Star of Milan.
"Miss Victoria, what are you doing?" I demanded, standing near the doorway. "That safe belongs to Mr. Vance!"
"I know whose safe it is," Victoria said smoothly. She reached inside, pulled out the velvet box containing the diamond necklace, and slipped it directly into the pocket of my white cleaning apron before I could even react.
I gasped, reaching into my pocket to pull it out. "Are you out of your mind?!"
"Don't touch it!" Victoria snapped, pulling a sleek silver smartphone from her robe. "The second you touch that velvet box, your fingerprints are on it, Grace."
She turned the phone toward me. On the screen was a live video feed from the bookshelf corner—a tiny red light blinking in the dark.
"Do you see that camera?" Victoria sneered, her eyes gleaming with triumphant malice. "That camera just recorded you standing over Julian's open safe late at night while he's out of town. It recorded me 'discovering' you stealing his dead wife's diamonds."
The horror hit me like a bucket of ice water.
"You set this up," I whispered, my voice trembling. "You opened his safe!"
"I guessed his code weeks ago," Victoria admitted freely, stepping closer and tapping her manicured nail against my chest. "When Julian returns tomorrow morning, I will show him the video. I will tell him I caught you in the act, and that when I tried to stop you, you attacked me and my poor, innocent future stepdaughters."

She leaned in, her smile utterly psychotic.
"Who do you think Julian will believe, Grace? The street-level housekeeper... or the woman he's about to marry?"
