Chapter 6 - The Return of the King

Dawn broke over the estate in a blanket of heavy, grey fog.

At 8:00 AM, the loud, rhythmic rumble of heavy engines echoed up the long winding driveway. Three matte-black armored Escalades pulled up to the front steps of the mansion.

Victoria was already waiting in the grand foyer, wearing a stunning white silk dress, her hair styled perfectly, looking like the picture of a grieving, dutiful fiancée. She had spent the last two hours intentionally mussing her makeup and scratching her own wrist to make it look like she had been in a struggle.

I stood near the dining room door, flanked by two confused household security guards who Victoria had ordered to hold me. Emma and Chloe were peeking from the top of the stairs, terrified.

The front doors were thrown open by two heavily armed bodyguards.

Julian Vance stepped into the house.

He looked majestic, towering, and utterly terrifying. He wore a dark three-piece Italian suit, his long black coat draped over his shoulders, his face an unreadable marble mask. Leo walked a step behind him, carrying a silver briefcase.

"Julian! Oh, thank God you're back!" Victoria wailed instantly, throwing herself toward him with fake tears streaming down her face.

Julian didn't catch her. He merely raised one large hand, stopping her three feet away from his chest.

Victoria blinked, caught off guard by his cold distance, but quickly recovered her act.

"Julian, it was awful!" she sobbed, clutching her bruised wrist. "Last night... I caught Grace! She was in your study! She cracked your safe and stole your mother's diamond necklace!"

Julian didn't say a word. His dark eyes remained completely calm, fixed on her face.

"When I tried to stop her," Victoria continued hysterically, pointing a dramatic finger at me, "she attacked me! She threatened me! And then she went upstairs and hit Emma and Chloe because they heard the noise! I had to lock myself in the bedroom all night just to survive!"

Emma’s tiny voice echoed from the top of the stairs. "That's a lie! Daddy, she's lying!"

"Quiet, Emma!" Victoria snapped, dropping her sweet tone for a fraction of a second before quickly looking back at Julian with wide, pathetic eyes. "See? Grace has brainwashed the children against me, Julian! You have to execute her right now! Throw her out into the street!"

Julian slowly took off his leather gloves, handed them to Leo, and finally spoke.

His voice was terrifyingly soft.

"Is that so, Victoria?" Julian asked.

"Yes! I have proof!" Victoria declared triumphantly, pulling her smartphone from her purse. "I installed a security camera in your study to keep the house safe while you were gone! I caught her on video stealing the diamonds!"

Julian looked down at her phone, then looked across the foyer toward me.

"Grace," Julian called out quietly. "Come here."

The two guards released my arms. I walked across the marble floor, stopping right beside Julian. I reached into my apron pocket, pulled out the velvet box, and held it out to him.

"I didn't touch his safe, Mr. Vance," I said softly, looking him straight in the eye. "I would never betray you or the girls."

Julian took the velvet box from my hand. For the briefest moment, his fingers brushed against mine, warm and reassuring.

"I know you wouldn't, Grace," Julian said gently.

Victoria’s jaw dropped. "Julian! What are you doing?! The video shows—"

"Leo," Julian interrupted, his voice turning into solid iron. "Lower the projection screen in the main hall."
