Chapter 8 - The Queen of the Household

The mansion returned to an incredible, profound peace.

The security guards cleared the hall, leaving only Julian, myself, and the two little girls standing at the top of the grand staircase.

Emma and Chloe came running down the marble steps, their little feet pitter-pattering fast against the carpet.

"Daddy!" Chloe cried out.

Julian dropped to both knees, opening his massive arms wide. He caught both of his daughters in a tight, desperate embrace, burying his face in their hair, his iron shoulders trembling slightly as he held the two most precious things in his world.

"I'm sorry, my sweet girls," Julian murmured softly, kissing Chloe’s cheek and stroking Emma's hair. "I am so sorry I let a monster near you. I promise you, no one will ever scare you again."

"Grace protected us, Daddy!" Emma said, hugging his neck tightly. "She stood in front of Miss Victoria! She didn't let her hurt us!"

Julian slowly stood up, turning his attention toward me.

For the first time in the five years I had worked for him, I saw raw, exposed emotion in the eyes of the city's most feared mafia boss.

He walked over to me, stopping just inches away.

Without a word, Julian Vance took both of my hands in his. His grip was warm, strong, and deeply steadying.

"Grace," he said, his voice deep and thick with sincerity. "You risked your life, your job, and your safety to shield my children. You showed more courage and loyalty than anyone in my empire."

"They are my family too, Mr. Vance," I said softly, tears finally trickling down my cheeks as the relief washed over me. "I would do it a thousand times over."

Julian reached into his jacket pocket. He didn't pull out money or a contract.

He pulled out the Star of Milan—his late wife’s priceless diamond necklace—and carefully placed it into my palms, folding my fingers over the sparkling jewels.

"Mr. Vance... I can't accept this," I gasped, trying to give it back. "This belonged to your wife."

"My late wife loved our daughters more than life itself," Julian said softly, his dark eyes shining with an unmistakable, profound warmth. "She would have wanted the woman who guards their hearts to wear it."

He stepped closer, his voice dropping into a low, intimate promise that made my breath catch in my throat.

"You are no longer a housekeeper in this estate, Grace," Julian declared, looking down at me with absolute devotion. "From this second on, you are the mistress of this house. My family is your family. My protection is your shield. And as long as I draw breath... no one will ever look down on you again."

Emma and Chloe ran over, wrapping their arms around my legs, laughing with pure joy.

I looked up into Julian’s eyes, holding the warm hands of the man everyone feared, and for the first time in five years, I knew I was finally home.
