Chapter 2 - The Silent Vault

The air inside Dante Moretti’s black armored SUV was a stark contrast to the stifling, perfume-choked atmosphere of the Bellamy estate. It was cool, clinical, and smelled faintly of leather and something metallic. Mara sat in the corner of the plush leather seat, her pulse finally beginning to settle from a frantic gallop to a steady thud. She kept her hands folded in her lap, trying to hide the angry red welts left by the gold rope.

Dante sat opposite her, his long legs stretched out, his attention fixed entirely on a thin, holographic display projected from his watch. He hadn’t spoken since they left the estate, and the silence in the car was heavy, a vacuum waiting to be filled.

"Why?" Mara asked, the word feeling foreign on her tongue.

Dante didn't look up immediately. He swiped a finger through the air, shifting data streams that looked like complex financial ledgers. "Why what, Miss Ellison? Why did I intervene, or why did they think they could get away with it?"

"Both," she said, her voice firmer now.

He finally looked at her. His eyes, in the low light of the vehicle, seemed almost translucent. "Vivienne Bellamy is a creature of optics. She believes that if she creates a narrative loud enough, the world will accept it as truth. She framed you because you are the convenient variable—the 'disgraced' sister, the one who lost her inheritance, the one no one would believe."

"And you?" Mara pressed. "You don't care about truth. You care about leverage."

Dante’s lips quirked—a shadow of a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "You’re perceptive. That’s a dangerous trait, but useful. I don't care about the sanctity of a wedding, Mara. But I do care about the Bellamy estate’s land holdings. Vivienne’s father has been selling off assets to cover debts I hold. If there is a scandal—a crime committed at their wedding involving the very girl they tried to discard—it devalues the property."

He leaned forward, the sudden intimacy of his presence making her breath hitch. "I didn't save you out of kindness. I saved you because the truth is a weapon, and right now, you are the trigger."

"What do you want from me?"

"Information," Dante replied. "The red stain on her dress. It wasn't wine, was it?"

Mara felt a chill run down her spine. She had noticed it too—the way the stain didn't absorb; the way it sat on the silk, viscous and dark. "It was blood. I thought I was hallucinating."

"It was a sedative-laced compound," Dante corrected. "She didn't spill it on herself. Someone attempted to poison the groom. Vivienne simply used your arrival as a convenient mask to dispose of the evidence and play the victim."

As the car wound through the city's neon-lit streets, moving toward a skyline that belonged to Moretti alone, Mara realized she wasn't just being rescued. She was being drafted into a war she hadn't even known was being fought.

"Where are we going?" she whispered.

"To the vault," Dante said, looking back at his screen. "Where we find out who else wanted the groom dead, and why they’re so afraid of you knowing it."
