Chapter 6 - The Weight of the Throne

As the sun dipped below the skyline, casting the office in deep, bruised purples, the facade of the professional world began to melt away. Mara leaned back in the chair, the adrenaline slowly receding, leaving a hollow ache in her chest.
Dante poured two glasses of scotch and brought them to the table. He set hers down, his fingers lingering near the glass.
"You’ve changed, Mara," he said quietly.
"I’ve survived," she countered, taking a slow sip. "There's a difference."
"You're becoming a mirror of me," he noted. "Sharp, efficient, and entirely devoid of the sentiment that once made you a target."
"Is that a compliment, or are you worried I'm going to turn that sharpness on you?" she asked, meeting his gaze.
Dante sat across from her, the shadows playing across his hard features. "I spent my life building this throne. I always expected to burn it down with me inside it when I finally finished my revenge. But you… you’re building something else."
"I'm building an empire that doesn't need to be fueled by blood," she said.
"Is that possible?" he asked, his voice softer than she had ever heard it. "In this city? With this much money? We are surrounded by sharks, Mara. If we stop biting, we’re the meal."

"Then we change the water," she replied. She reached into her blazer and pulled out a file. "I’ve spent the last month quietly buying out the minority shareholders of your competitors. I don't want to destroy them, Dante. I want to own the infrastructure that allows them to exist. We won’t be the sharks anymore. We’ll be the sea."
Dante looked at the file, then back at her. For the first time, he looked truly vulnerable, as if he were seeing something he had never imagined possible.
