Chapter 4 - The Black SUVs on the Driveway

The helicopter didn't land—it didn't need to. But the sound of low-flying aircraft drew the attention of everyone on Hawthorne Lane. Neighbors poked their heads out from their front doors, shading their eyes against the glare.

Then came the roar of heavy engines down the quiet suburban street.

I stopped pushing the lawnmower, letting the engine idle and sputter in the grass.

Tires squealed as three matte-black, armored Chevrolet Suburbans turned sharply onto our driveway, kicking up a storm of white gravel and dust. The lead vehicle didn't bother stopping in the driveway; it barreled right across the manicured lawn, coming to a dramatic, aggressive halt ten feet from where Garrick and Miriam stood on the porch.

Garrick’s face drained of color. The arrogant, self-satisfied smirk melted away, replaced by sudden, frantic confusion.

“What the hell is this?” Garrick stammered, stepping back toward the front door. “Is this a raid? Did someone call the city code enforcement?”

Miriam dropped her glass of sweet tea, shattering the crystal against the concrete patio. “Garrick, get inside! Those look like federal agents!”

Before Garrick could reach the door, the heavy doors of the lead SUV swung open simultaneously.

Four men stepped out, dressed in sharp, slate-gray bespoke suits, wearing dark sunglasses despite the bright Texas sun. They moved with the synchronized, absolute precision of a security detail trained in high-threat extractions.

And then, the rear door of the middle vehicle opened.

My brother, Luke, stepped out.

He hadn't changed much in five years, except the boyish anger had been replaced by the hardened, immutable authority of a self-made multi-millionaire. His silver-threaded suit was immaculate, his jawline like granite, and his eyes locked instantly onto mine through the haze of heat and dust.

He didn't look at Garrick. He didn't look at Miriam. He walked straight past the idling lawnmower, his gaze fixed entirely on the blood stain soaking through the front of my shirt.

“Sarah,” Luke breathed, his voice tight, trembling with a controlled rage that could flatten mountains.

Before I could speak, Garrick found his voice, puffing out his chest and stepping aggressively toward my brother.

“Hey! Who the hell do you think you are driving onto my property? You’re trespassing! I demand you get these vehicles off my lawn right now, or I’m calling the—”

Luke didn't even break his stride.

He simply raised his right hand and snapped his fingers.

In a split second, two of the security operatives moved with terrifying speed. One grabbed Garrick by the shoulder and arm, twisting him around and slamming him face-first against the side of his own Suburban with a sickening thud, while the other neutralized the second security threat—which turned out to be nothing, as Miriam began shrieking at the top of her lungs.

“Help! Police! We’re being attacked by thugs!” Miriam screamed, waving her arms wildly. “Garrick, do something!”

“Garrick can’t do a damn thing right now,” Luke said coldly, stopping right in front of me. He shrugged off his expensive suit jacket, draped it tenderly over my shivering shoulders, and looked down at my blood-soaked shirt.

“Luke…” I whispered, my knees finally giving out.

He caught me before I hit the dirt, sweeping me up into his arms as easily as if I were a child.

“I’ve got you, sis,” Luke murmured, his voice cracking with emotion for a fraction of a second before turning back to cold, calculating iron. He looked over his shoulder at one of the attorneys who had stepped out of the third vehicle with a briefcase.

“Marcus, serve the papers,” Luke commanded.

Marcus stepped forward, pulling a stack of legally binding documents from his leather folder. He walked up to Miriam, who was hyperventilating on the porch, and shoved the papers into her trembling hands.

“What is this? What are you giving me?!” Miriam screeched, backing away.

“That,” Marcus said with a chillingly polite smile, “is a temporary emergency restraining order, an immediate freeze on all joint marital and corporate assets controlled by Garrick Kade, and a notice of intent to file for immediate civil litigation regarding medical abuse, elder manipulation, and property fraud.”

Garrick, still pinned against the side of the SUV, roared in fury. “You can’t do this! That’s my house! She’s my wife! She belongs to me!”

May you like

Luke turned his head slowly, looking at Garrick over his shoulder with eyes dead and black as obsidian.

“She doesn't belong to anyone, Kade,” Luke said softly. “And by sunset, you won't even own the shirt on your back.”
