Chapter 9 - The Courtroom Reckoning

The civil and criminal proceedings were wrapped up in record time, thanks to Luke’s legal team and an avalanche of irrefutable digital and medical evidence.

Two months later, the Travis County Courthouse was packed for the final settlement hearing.

Miriam sat on the back bench, dressed in plain, unbranded black clothing, her social standing completely obliterated, her face hollow and drawn. She didn't look at anyone.

Garrick sat at the defendant's table beside a tired public defender, looking every bit like a man who had realized the trap he built had snapped shut around his own neck. His corporate career was completely incinerated, his assets seized to cover legal fees and financial restitution, and he was currently facing a federal indictment for wire fraud and corporate embezzlement.

At the plaintiff’s table, I sat beside Luke and Dr. Alana Vance. I wore a crisp, tailored white blazer that hid my surgical scars, my posture straight, my head held high.

Judge Robert Sterling—a stern, veteran jurist with a reputation for zero tolerance regarding domestic cruelty and financial fraud—sat high above the courtroom, reviewing the final settlement documents over his reading glasses.

He looked down from the bench, his gaze fixing coldly on Garrick and his attorney.

“Mr. Kade,” Judge Sterling’s deep voice resonated through the silent courtroom. “In my thirty years on the bench, I have reviewed many cases of marital dissolution. But rarely have I encountered such a calculated, sociopathic disregard for human dignity, medical vulnerability, and basic fiduciary trust.”

Garrick swallowed hard, staring down at the polished mahogany table. “Your Honor, my wife… she exaggerated certain domestic disagreements—”

“Silence, Mr. Kade,” the judge snapped, slamming a hand down on the desk. “Your own corporate emails, your mother’s text messages coordinating the deliberate withholding of post-surgical medication, and the forensic audit reports submitted by the plaintiff’s legal team paint an undeniable picture of systemic abuse and financial sabotage.”

Judge Sterling picked up his gavel, looking directly at me for a brief, compassionate moment before delivering his final verdict.

“The court hereby grants the plaintiff, Sarah Vance-Kade, full and immediate ownership of all pre-marital and marital real estate, complete dissolution of the marriage without spousal support obligations to the defendant, and orders the defendant to pay maximum statutory damages for medical endangerment and fraud.”

The judge looked back down at Garrick.

“Furthermore, the federal prosecutor’s office has been advised to proceed without obstruction regarding your corporate criminal indictments. May God have mercy on you, Mr. Kade, because this court certainly will not.”

CRACK.

The gavel came down with the force of an executioner's axe.

As the bailiff approached Garrick to lead him toward the holding cells for his federal arraignment, Miriam let out a sharp, pathetic sob from the back row, burying her face in her trembling hands.

May you like

I didn't look back as I walked out of the courtroom.

The nightmare was over.
