Chapter 7 - The Church Steeple Crumbles

In tight-knit suburban communities, reputation is currency. And for Miriam Kade—who prided herself on being the undisputed matriarch of the local suburban parish, heading the flower committee, organizing the charity bake sales, and sitting in the front pew every Sunday morning—reputation was everything.

By Saturday morning, that currency was worthless.

Luke hadn't just attacked Garrick legally; he had unleashed a PR and investigative blitz that targeted the very core of Miriam’s social dominance.

A dossier detailing Miriam’s history of domestic psychological abuse, her coordinated isolation of vulnerable family members, and the specific incident of medical sabotage—flushing prescription painkillers down the toilet while mocking a cancer survivor—was digitally delivered to every member of the church elders' board, including Pastor Thomas.

At 10:00 AM on Saturday, Miriam walked into the church fellowship hall for the weekly women’s ministry meeting, expecting her usual chorus of warm greetings and deferential bows.

Instead, the room went dead silent the moment she stepped through the double doors.

Women she had known for ten years—women whose secrets she had weaponized, whose families she had judged from her high horse—suddenly turned their backs, whispering behind rolled-up church bulletins.

Pastor Thomas stepped out from his office down the hall, his face stern and lined with deep disappointment.

“Miriam,” the pastor said, his voice carrying clearly across the silent hall. “We received the documentation this morning. And we have reviewed the police incident reports filed by Ms. Vance’s legal team regarding the events at your son’s home.”

Miriam forced an uneasy, brittle smile to her face, lifting her chin with characteristic arrogance. “Pastor Thomas, surely you aren't listening to scandalous lies spread by a bitter, unstable woman who tried to destroy my son’s marriage! You know my character—”

“Miriam, stop,” Pastor Thomas interrupted, holding up a hand. “We spoke with Dr. Alana Vance at Baylor Medical this morning regarding the medical endangerment of a post-surgical patient. Furthermore, the church leadership has voted unanimously to suspend your membership and strip you of all committee leadership roles effective immediately.”

Miriam gasped, clutching her pearls as if she had been physically struck. “You’re suspending me?! After everything I’ve given to this parish?! You can't do that! I demand a hearing!”

“The hearing is over, Miriam,” Pastor Thomas said coldly, turning on his heel and walking back toward his office. “True Christianity is measured by how you treat the vulnerable, not by how loud you shout in the front pew. Do not return to this property until further notice.”

Miriam stood frozen in the center of the fellowship hall, surrounded by dozens of people who refused to meet her eyes. The social empire she had spent thirty years constructing had vanished in less than twelve hours.
