Chapter 3 - Medical Emergency and Critical Clues

The blare of sirens outside shattered the horror that had frozen me in place.
I backed out of the room, my mind reeling, and ran to the front door as red and blue lights strobed across the living room windows. Paramedics rushed in with stretchers, accompanied by two uniformed police officers.
Within minutes, the team took control. A paramedic named Sarah gently examined Tommy, attaching a tiny oxygen mask to his face, while another wrapped Lily in a warm thermal blanket and started a hydration drip.
“Sir, both children are severely malnourished and showing signs of acute dehydration,” the lead paramedic said, looking at me with a mixture of professional focus and deep concern. “The infant’s vitals are unstable. We’re transporting them to St. Jude’s Children's Hospital immediately.”
“I’m coming with you,” I said flatly.
Officer Ramirez, a veteran cop with graying temples, stepped into my path. “Sir, I need you to stay here and answer a few questions. The state of this house—”
“My kids are dying!” I shouted, stepping up to him. “Look at my face officer! Do I look like a man who did this? I just got back from a two-week corporate trip in Tokyo. My flight landed three hours ago!”
I pulled out my passport and boarding passes, shoving them into his hand. Ramirez looked at the stamps, then looked down the hallway toward the splintered door of the hidden room.
“Where is your wife, Mr. Vance?” Ramirez asked, his tone shifting from suspicion to grim seriousness.
“I don’t know,” I breathed, the terrifying weight of reality crushing down on me. “I thought she was here. But that room… somebody was in that room.”
Ramirez glanced at his partner. “Go with your kids, Mr. Vance. I’m calling Detective Vance from Major Crimes. Do not touch anything in that back room.”
I rode in the back of the ambulance, holding Lily’s small, shivering hand while the paramedic monitored Tommy’s faint pulse. Lily’s eyes flickered open under the harsh interior lights.
“Dad?” she whispered through her oxygen mask.
“I’m right here, baby. You’re safe now.”
“Mommy tried to fight the dark man,” Lily whispered, a tear trailing down her pale cheek. “She put us in the closet and locked it. She told me to squeeze Tommy’s hand so he wouldn't cry. She said… she said if I made a sound, the dark man would take Tommy away.”

A cold sweat broke out across my back. Sarah hadn't abandoned our children.
She had been attacked.
