Chapter 4 - The Hidden Drive

By 2:00 AM, both children were stabilized in the pediatric intensive care unit.

The doctor assured me that Tommy had suffered no permanent organ damage, though he would need several days of IV fluids and monitoring. Lily was resting soundly in the bed beside him, her fingers still holding tight to her brother’s blanket even in her sleep.

I sat in the plastic chair between their beds, my hands buried in my face, when Detective Vance walked into the room. He was a tall man in a rumpled trench coat, holding a clear evidence bag containing a small silver USB flash drive.

“Mr. Vance,” he said softly, closing the door behind him. “We finished sweeping your residence. forensics found clear signs of a forced entry through the back patio door four days ago. We also found blood spatter near the hidden room that doesn't match yours or your children's.”

“Is it Sarah’s?” I asked, my voice cracking.

“We’re running the DNA now,” Vance replied. “In the meantime, our tech team found this flash drive tucked into a hollowed-out book inside that hidden room. It was labeled with your name.”

He handed me a encrypted tablet connected to the drive. “You need to see this.”

My hands shook as I pressed play on the screen.

The video opened with a shaky frame. Sarah appeared on the screen, sitting at the desk in that dark hidden room. Her face was bruised, a deep cut running along her hairline, her eyes wild with terror and grief.

“Mark… if you’re watching this, it means they found me,” Sarah’s voice trembled through the tablet’s speaker. “It means I failed to protect you from my past.”

She wiped a tear from her cheek, leaning closer to the camera.

“Six years ago, before I met you, I wasn't Sarah Miller. My real name is Elena Vance. I was an investigative accountant for the cartel syndicate run by Victor Rostov. When I discovered what Rostov was doing, I stole his master ledger and went into hiding under a false identity.”

I gasped, staring at the screen in utter disbelief. My wife of five years—the woman I made coffee for every morning, the mother of my children—was a fugitive from an international syndicate.

“I thought I was safe, Mark. I thought I had buried Elena forever. But three weeks ago, Rostov’s men tracked my location. They sent me a message: give them the ledger, or they would kill you and the babies. That’s why I forced you to take that business trip to Tokyo. I needed you out of the country so you wouldn't get caught in the crossfire.”

Sarah looked behind her shoulder at the heavy oak door.

“I locked the kids in the safe wing behind the storage room. I gave them food and water, but I had to give them mild pediatric sedatives so they wouldn't scream when Rostov’s men breached the house. I couldn't risk them finding the babies. Mark… I’m going to give myself up to draw them away from the house. The master ledger is hidden in Lily’s stuffed bear. Take the kids, take the ledger to the FBI, and run. I love you. Forgive me.”

The screen cut to static.
