Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

From the shadows above on the steel catwalks, three men stepped into the dim light, armed with automatic handguns.

At the center of the main floor, tied to a wooden chair beneath a single hanging lightbulb, was Sarah. Her face was bloody, her coat torn, but her eyes snapped open when she saw me walking toward her.

“Mark! No! Why did you come?!” she wept, straining against her ropes.

“Because I promised to protect our family,” I said softly, stopping ten feet away from her.

From behind a row of industrial furnace tanks, a tall man in a tailored charcoal coat walked out. He had slicked-back gray hair, sharp blue eyes, and a cruel, amused smile. Victor Rostov.

“Impressive,” Rostov said, clapping his hands slowly. “The simple architect steps into the wolf’s den. Do you have any idea how much trouble your wife caused me, Mark? Five years of lost revenue. Millions of dollars frozen by federal authorities.”

“I have the ledger,” I said, reaching slowly into my coat pocket and pulling out the tiny micro-SD card, holding it between my thumb and forefinger. “Every account, every shadow company, every bribe you ever paid. It’s all right here.”

Rostov’s eyes sparkled with greed. “Hand it over.”

“First, cut her loose,” I demanded.

Rostov smirked. He signaled one of his armed guards, who stepped up behind Sarah, pulling a hunting knife from his belt and slicing the thick ropes binding her wrists.

Sarah collapsed forward onto her knees, coughing. I stepped forward to help her, but Rostov pulled a suppressed pistol from his jacket and pointed it directly at my chest.

“Toss the card, Mark,” Rostov ordered coldly. “Then maybe I let you two have a few final words together.”

He never intended to let us walk out alive.

I looked at Sarah. She caught my eye, a subtle, unspoken understanding passing between us. Five years of marriage had built a language without words.

I smiled faintly at Rostov. “Here’s the ledger.”

Instead of tossing the card to him, I slammed my thumb down onto my phone's screen in my left hand, executing a pre-programmed script that uploaded the master ledger directly to the FBI’s public tip server and Detective Vance’s terminal.

At the exact same instant, I threw the tiny card into the roaring, open maintenance pit of burning diesel heaters ten feet to my right.
