Chapter 4 - The Truth in the Blood

At 2:14 AM, the heavy oak door of the nursery swung open.

Dr. Sterling walked in, holding a single sheet of paper. Her face was pale, her fingers visibly trembling around the document. Behind her, Ortega stood guard with a look of quiet shock.

Caden, who had been sitting in a high-backed leather chair across from Elena for three hours without moving or speaking, stood up instantly.

Elena raised her head from where she sat on the floor. The children were still deeply asleep, their breathing synchronized into a soft, rhythmic hum that filled the quiet room.

"Speak," Caden commanded.

Dr. Sterling swallowed hard. "The genetic markers are... unequivocal, Mr. Voss. The maternity probability is 99.998%." She looked at Elena, her eyes filled with professional bewilderment and deep sympathy. "Miss Voss is not merely the gestational surrogate. She is the biological mother of all three children. The 'donor eggs' listed in your contract were a complete fabrication by the clinic."

The room seemed to lose all heat.

Elena felt a sharp, ringing sensation in her ears. She looked down at the three tiny faces resting against her lap. Her children. Not just the babies she had carried, but her own flesh and blood. The children her dying mother had prayed she would have one day. The children a corrupt doctor had erased with a stroke of a pen.

A dry, choked sound escaped her throat before she could stop it. Tears spilled over her lashes, hot and blinding, falling onto Maya's tiny velvet jumpsuit.

Caden didn't move for three full seconds. His posture was so rigid he looked like a statue forged from cold iron.

"Explain the fraud, Sterling," Caden said, his voice dropping into a register so terrifyingly flat that Ortega subtly shifted his stance toward the door.

"Saint Augustine's Genesis Clinic was operated by Dr. Aris Thorne," Sterling explained, her voice shaking. "From what I can piece together from the raw sequencing data, Thorne used Miss Voss's eggs and your genetic material, created viable embryos, and successfully implanted three of them. But when the delivery became complicated at thirty-two weeks, Thorne realized he had a high-profile buyer—you—who was paying top tier for a discreet surrogacy, and a vulnerable, uninsured mother with no legal representation whose mother had just passed away."

"He stole them," Elena whispered, her voice cracking. "He saw that I was alone. He saw that I had no money left after my mother's funeral. He gave me forms to sign while I was still sedated from the emergency C-section..."

"He told you they died," Caden finished the sentence for her. His eyes turned to liquid fire as he looked down at her. "He collected your signature on a consent-to-cremate form, forged a death certificate, wiped the hospital database, and handed me my children in exchange for three million dollars in untraceable bearer bonds."

"And he kept the paper trail clean by making sure we never met," Elena said, her grief instantly hardening into a terrifying, crystallized rage. "He picked an anonymous wealthy client from out of state and a local girl with no family left to look for her."

Caden walked over to the nursery door and opened it. He looked out into the hallway, where four heavily armed men stood at attention.

"Ortega," Caden said softly.

"Boss?"

"Find Dr. Aris Thorne. I want him brought to the warehouse on Pier 4 by 5:00 AM. If his security detail resists, kill them all."

"Wait!" Elena called out, standing up carefully so as not to wake the children. She stepped out of the ring of sleeping toddlers, her eyes locking onto Caden’s back. "No. Not like that."

Caden turned, glaring at her with cold disbelief. "He stole my children, Elena. He stole your life. He treated human beings like black-market inventory. You want me to call the police?"

"The police won't touch him!" Elena said, stepping closer to him until she was standing inches from his chest. "You said yourself—he has city council members and judges in his pocket. If you just abduct him and put a bullet in his head, his partners will erase the servers, burn the evidence, and walk away. There are other mothers, Caden! You think I was the only one?"

Caden stopped. His brow furrowed as he processed her words.

"Saint Augustine’s is a high-volume fertility center," Elena continued, her analytical mind working at lightning speed despite the tears still wet on her cheeks. "If Thorne ran a baby-trafficking operation out of the Genesis wing, he didn't do it alone. He needed corrupt social workers, nurses, accountants to hide the wire transfers, and a legal team to forge the adoption and birth certificates. I don't just want Aris Thorne dead, Mr. Voss. I want his entire network burned to the ground, every asset seized, and every mother who was lied to given the truth!"

Caden stared at her. The anger in his face slowly gave way to a dark, profound respect.

"You're not just an accountant, are you?" Caden asked softly.

"I was three credits away from my master’s in forensic auditing when my mother got sick," Elena said, her voice steady and lethal. "Give me access to your financial intelligence team and thirty minutes with your bank transfer records for the Genesis Clinic. I'll give you the names of every man who touched that money."

Caden looked down at her small, trembling hands, then at the three sleeping children on the floor behind her.

He reached out, his long fingers gently catching a stray tear on her cheek, his touch surprisingly soft for a man whose hands carried so much blood.

"Ortega," Caden said without turning around.

"Yes, Mr. Voss?"

"Set up a workstation in my primary study. Get Miss Voss full administrative access to our financial servers." Caden’s hazel eyes burned into Elena’s. "We aren't just going to Pier 4, Elena. We're going to war."
