Chapter 6: The Siege on the Glass House

Pier 4 was an abandoned industrial warehouse at the edge of the dark harbor. Rain lashed against the corrugated iron roof, mixing with the sound of cold waves slapping against concrete pilings.

Inside, suspended under a single hanging floodlight, Dr. Marcus Vance was tied to a steel chair. His expensive designer suit was torn, his nose was bleeding, and two of Caden’s men stood behind him like statues of doom.
When the heavy sliding door of the warehouse creaked open, Vance looked up, his eyes wild with terror.
"Voss! Please!" Vance screamed, his voice echoing off the metal walls. "It wasn't me! I was just executing orders! Thorne handled the contracts! I didn't know—"
Vance’s voice died in his throat.
Stepping out from behind Caden's towering frame came Elena. She had discarded the robe, wearing a sleek black sweater provided by Caden's staff, her hair pulled back into a tight pony-tail, her eyes shining with cold, unyielding power.
Vance’s jaw dropped. His face went from pale to ghostly white. "You..."
"Hello, Dr. Vance," Elena said softly, stepping into the circle of light. "Do you remember me? August 14th. Room 412. You held a clipboard and told me God worked in mysterious ways."
"Miss... Miss Voss..." Vance stammered, sweat pouring down his forehead. "You... you don't understand... they threatened my family... Moretti's men—"
"Save it," Elena interrupted, reaching into her coat and pulling out a printed stack of financial ledgers, tossing them directly into his lap. "This is the audit trail for Vance & Associates. Four hundred thousand dollars received from Aegis Medical on August 15th—the day after my C-section. Another two hundred thousand logged under 'consulting fees' three weeks later."
Vance stared at the papers as if they were covered in poison. "How... how did you get these?"
"She's a forensic accountant, Doctor," Caden said, stepping beside her, his heavy hand resting lightly on the butt of his holstered gun. "And more importantly, she is the mother of the three children you stole from my house."
"They aren't your children!" Vance blurted out in panic. "They were never meant for you! Moretti set it up!"
Caden paused, his eyes narrowing into slits. "What did you say?"
Vance sobbed, realizing he had said too much. "Moretti... Moretti knew you were looking for a surrogate after your wife passed away! He instructed Thorne to find a mother with no living relatives, harvest her eggs, use your genetic sample, and deliver the children to you! The plan was never just money, Voss! Moretti wanted a permanent leverage point over you! In five years, when the children were older, he was going to release the truth to the press and the federal authorities—accuse you of kidnapping and child trafficking to destroy your empire and put you in federal prison forever!"
Elena felt a cold chill run down her spine. The depth of the cruelty was breathtaking. They hadn't just stolen her children; they had turned her babies into a delayed-action bomb designed to ruin two lives at once.
Suddenly, a sharp, metallic sound echoed from the high rafters of the warehouse.
CRACK.
A high-caliber rifle shot shattered the floodlight above Vance’s head, plunging the warehouse into darkness.
"AMBUSH!" Ortega screamed.
Guns roared instantly. Muzzle flashes illuminated the vast warehouse in violent, stuttering bursts of red and white light. Bullets whined off steel beams and concrete floors.
Before Elena could react, Caden’s massive body slammed into her, sweeping her off her feet and throwing her behind a thick stack of concrete barrier blocks. He covered her body completely with his own, his heavy coat shielding her from flying glass and concrete splinters.
"Are you hit?!" Caden roared over the deafening noise of gunfire.
"I'm fine!" Elena yelled back, pulling her 9mm from her coat.
Above them, on the catwalks, dark figures were moving—Moretti's hit squad, sent to clean up Vance before he could talk.
Caden leaned around the concrete block, fired three rapid shots from his custom sidearm, and a gunman plummeted from the high catwalk, crashing onto the wooden pallets below.
"They brought a squad," Caden said, his breathing heavy, his eyes burning with tactical precision. "They knew Vance was taken. Ortega! Suppress the north catwalk!"
"I'm out of primary mags, boss!" Ortega shouted back from twenty yards away.
Elena looked through the gap in the concrete blocks. Ten yards away, dropped near Vance's tied body, lay a discarded tactical bag dropped by one of Caden's fallen guards. It was bristling with fresh magazines.
"Cover me!" Elena demanded.
"Elena, NO!" Caden reached for her, but she was already moving.
She kept low, staying beneath the line of sight, sprinting across the bullet-swept floor like a shadow. She reached the tactical bag, grabbed two double-stacked magazines, spun on her heel, and fired twice at a gunman aiming at Caden from the stairs.
Her shots hit the attacker squarely in the chest. He tumbled backward down the iron steps.
Elena slid back behind the concrete barrier, tossing the fresh magazines directly into Ortega's hands.
Ortega caught them, staring at her in sheer, unadulterated awe. "Holy hell, lady!"
Caden grabbed Elena by the shoulders, pulling her close, his eyes wide with a terrifying mixture of fury and intense admiration. "I told you to stay down!"
"And I told you I know how to shoot!" Elena shouted back, a fierce, reckless grin breaking through her fear. "Now finish them so we can go back to our children!"
Caden let out a dark, booming roar of laughter—a sound that echoed over the gunfire like thunder.

"With pleasure, my queen," Caden growled.
He rose from behind the barrier like an unstoppable force of nature, laying down a devastating wall of suppression fire that wiped out Moretti's remaining mercenaries within ninety seconds.
