Chapter 2 - The Truth Unveiled

The emergency room exploded into chaotic motion. The same nurses who had been hesitating over a deposit slips suddenly flew into a frenzy, pushing my bed toward the private express elevator. Dr. Sterling stayed right by my side, holding a oxygen mask over my face."Clara, look at me," he commanded gently, his voice filled with panic. "Stay with us. Your father is flying back from Tokyo right now. The best surgeons in the country are already scrubbing in."

I could barely nod. My eyes flicked over to Patricia, who was standing frozen in the middle of the corridor. Her face was an asylum-white shade of pale. Her hands were trembling so hard she dropped my purse, its contents spilling across the polished floor. From her trench coat pocket, the matte-black titanium card slid out, bouncing with a heavy, metallic click against the tile.

Dr. Sterling’s eyes followed the sound. He looked at the card, then looked at Patricia’s guilty, terrified face. He knew exactly what that card was. It was the Centurion-level institutional card issued only to the top three members of the Sterling family dynasty.

"You," Dr. Sterling hissed, stepping toward Patricia. "You stole her card. You withheld her medical access while she was bleeding."

"I... I didn't know!" Patricia screamed, her voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak. "She never told us! She lived in a tiny apartment when Julian met her! She drives a ten-year-old sedan! How was I supposed to know she was a Sterling?!"

"Because a decent human being doesn't let a pregnant woman die over a credit card, regardless of who she is!" Dr. Sterling roared. He turned to the two hospital security guards standing by the door. "Detain this woman. Do not let her leave the building. Call the Chicago Police Department and tell them we have an attempted murder and grand larceny in progress."

"No! You can't do this! Julian! Call Julian!" Patricia shrieked as the heavy hands of the security guards grabbed her upper arms, dragging her back into the waiting area.

As the elevator doors closed, cutting off her screams, the darkness finally took me. The pain subsided into a cold, weightless void. Please, I prayed into the darkness. Save my baby. Take me if you must, but save my baby.

Hours passed in a blur of bright lights, the clinking of steel instruments, and the distant, urgent voices of doctors talking about blood pressures and oxygen levels.

When my eyes finally fluttered open again, the harsh, noisy atmosphere of the ER was gone. Instead, I was lying in a massive, luxurious room that looked more like a five-star hotel suite than a hospital. The walls were covered in soft cream wallpaper, a large plush sofa sat by a roaring fireplace, and giant windows looked out over the stormy Chicago skyline.

"Clara?"

I turned my head slowly. Sitting in a chair beside my bed was a man with sharp features and dark hair, his expensive Italian suit jacket thrown over the back of the chair. It was Julian, my husband. His eyes were red-rimmed, and he looked completely disheveled, his tie loosened.

"Julian..." My voice was barely a rasp. My hand immediately flew to my stomach. It was flat. A wave of pure panic washed over me. "The baby... where is my baby?!"

"Shh, Clara, don't move," Julian said, quickly leaning over me and pressing a button to call the nurse. "The baby is alive. He's in the incubator in the advanced NICU downstairs. He's small, only four pounds, but the doctors say he's a fighter. He's going to make it."

A massive sob tore from my throat, a mixture of intense relief and residual trauma. "He's alive... thank God."

Julian held my hand, but I felt a sudden coldness return to my chest. I pulled my hand away from his grip. I remembered everything. I remembered the stairs. I remembered Patricia’s laughter.

Julian looked hurt, but then his expression turned deeply conflicted, shifting between confusion, guilt, and fear. "Clara... Dr. Sterling told me everything. The police are downstairs. They've been questioning my mother for the last four hours. Clara, what is going on? Why did the director of the entire medical group call you the owner of this hospital? Why did you lie to me for two years about who you were?"

I looked at my husband—the man I had fallen in love with in a quiet coffee shop near the university, the man I thought would protect me from the world. "I didn't lie to you, Julian. I just never told you my last name was Sterling-Vanguard. I wanted to see if someone would love me for Clara, the girl with nothing, rather than Clara, the girl who inherits billions. And it’s a good thing I did, because tonight, I found out exactly what your family is made of."
