Chapter 3 - The Fractured Marriage

Julian flinched as if I had struck him. He looked down at his own hands, his jaw tightening. "Clara, my mother... she told me it was an accident. She said you tripped on the rug near the stairs, and that she panicked when you started bleeding. She said she didn't understand what that black card was, she thought it was a fake rewards card or something—"
"She pushed me, Julian," I said, my voice steady, cold, and cutting through his excuses like a scalpel.
Julian raised his eyes, horror flickering within them. "What?"
"She pushed me because I refused to sign over the deed of our townhome to her name so she could use it as collateral for her gambling debts," I stated, watching his reaction closely. "And when I was bleeding on the floor, begging for help, she told me that if I died, she would find you a better wife. She hid my card because she wanted me to die in that emergency room."
"No... no, she wouldn't go that far," Julian stammered, shaking his head in denial. "She loves me. She wants what's best for us. She's a bit snobbish, I know, and she's been hard on you, but attempted murder? Clara, you're exhausted, you've lost blood, maybe you remembered it wrong—"
"I remembered it perfectly," I interrupted, my heart hardening into blocks of ice. The last shred of hope I had for my marriage evaporated into the sterile air of the room. Julian was a coward. He was a man-child who could never see past his mother's manipulation, even when his own wife and premature son almost died because of it. "And the hospital security cameras in the hallway saw her pulling the card from my purse and hiding it while I was screaming in pain. It's all on video, Julian."
Before Julian could answer, the door to the luxury suite swung open. Two tall men in dark, bespoke suits entered, followed by an older man with graying hair at the temples and an aura of absolute power.
It was my father, Charles Sterling, the global CEO of Vanguard-Sterling Enterprises. He had just flown in from Tokyo on his private jet, and his face was a mask of cold, unyielding rage.
Julian immediately stood up, recognizing the billionaire tycoon from every financial magazine in the world. "Mr. Sterling... I... I'm Julian Mercer. Clara's husband."
Charles Sterling didn't even acknowledge Julian’s extended hand. He walked past him as if he were made of glass, approaching my bed and gently kissing my forehead. "My sweet girl," my father murmured, his voice thick with rare emotion. "I am so sorry I wasn't here. If I had known what these parasites were doing to you, I would have burned their entire world to the ground months ago."
"Father," I whispered, tears blurring my vision. "The baby is safe."
"I know. I've already transferred the best neonatologist team from Johns Hopkins to watch over my grandson," Charles said. Then, he turned slowly to face Julian. The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by a terrifying, predatory coldness. "As for you, Mr. Mercer. Your marriage to my daughter is over."
Julian went pale. "Mr. Sterling, please, you can't just dissolve our marriage! I love Clara! I didn't know about any of this! My mother acts on her own, I can't be held responsible for her actions—"
"You allowed your mother to abuse my daughter in your own home for two years because you were too weak to stand up to her," Charles Sterling said, his voice dropping to a dangerously low register. "And tonight, your family attempted to assassinate the heiress of the Sterling empire and her child. Do you truly think you are walking away from this with your career, your assets, or your freedom intact?"
"What do you mean?" Julian whispered, a tremor finally appearing in his voice.

My father gestured to one of his lawyers, who stepped forward and opened a leather brief case. "As of ten minutes ago, Vanguard-Sterling Group has pulled all credit lines and institutional investments from Mercer Logistics—your father’s company, where you serve as Vice President. By tomorrow morning at opening bell, Mercer Logistics will be declared insolvent. We are launching a full audit into your family’s tax records, your mother’s offshore gambling accounts, and your personal corporate expenditures."
Julian gasped, stumbling back against the sofa. "You're destroying my family's entire life's work! For what?! An accident?!""It was no accident," I said from the bed, my voice echoing clearly in the large room. "Goodbye, Julian. The next time you see me, it will be in a courtroom."
