Chapter 5 - The Snake's Last Stand

Three weeks passed. My physical recovery was swift, thanks to the world-class care I received, but the psychological wounds were deep. Every time I closed my eyes, I could still feel the sensation of falling, followed by the terrifying sight of my own blood on the floor.
But every day, I spent hours in the NICU, holding Leo skin-to-skin for kangaroo care. He was gaining weight rapidly, his lungs strengthening with every passing day. He was my anchor.
While I healed, the Mercer family was completely unraveling. Deprived of their wealth, they had to rely on a public defender for Patricia’s initial criminal arraignment. Julian, desperate to avoid jail time as an accessory, had hired a low-grade defense attorney using the last of his personal savings and was trying to negotiate a plea deal with the District Attorney.
One afternoon, my assistant, Sarah, entered my hospital suite. "Miss Sterling, Julian Mercer is downstairs in the lobby. He's been there for twelve hours. He’s begging for just five minutes to speak with you. The security team wants to know if they should remove him from the property permanently."
I looked out the window at the gray Chicago sky. "No. Tell security to let him up. But have two guards stand inside the room with me."
Five minutes later, Julian entered. He looked terrible. He had lost weight, his clothes were wrinkled, and the confident, arrogant aura he used to carry around his mother was completely gone. He looked like a broken man.
"Clara," he breathed, taking a step toward me before the two large security guards stepped in his path, their expressions grim. He stopped, holding up his hands. "I just... I wanted to see how you were. And how Leo is doing."
"Leo is doing wonderful, no thanks to your family," I said coldly, sitting upright in my chair, draped in a luxurious cashmere shawl. "Why are you here, Julian?"
Julian dropped to his knees, mimicking the way Dr. Sterling had knelt weeks ago, but where Dr. Sterling’s gesture had been out of pure respect and panic for my life, Julian’s looked pathetic and desperate.
"Clara, please, I beg you. Talk to your father. He’s destroyed my father’s company. We’ve had to file for personal bankruptcy. Our townhome is being foreclosed on next week. I’ve been fired from my job, and no other logistics firm in the state will hire me because of the Sterling name. We are ruined."
"You are experiencing the consequences of your own actions, Julian," I said, my voice devoid of emotion. "When your mother was abusing me, you laughed it off. When she called me a beggar, you told me to just endure it to keep the peace. When she threw me down the stairs, you tried to find an excuse for her."
"I was blind!" Julian cried, tears streaming down his face. "I swear, Clara, I didn't know she would try to hurt you like that! I love you! Can we just try again? For Leo? A boy needs his father! We can move away from Chicago, start over somewhere else, away from my mother and away from your family's billions. Just a normal life, like we used to have!"
I looked at him, feeling nothing but profound pity. "You still don't get it, do you? You think this is about the money. I loved our simple life, Julian. I would have happily lived in that townhome forever and raised our son on your modest salary. But the moment your mother showed her true colors, and you chose her over the wife who was dying on your floor, you proved you were never a husband. And you will never be a father to my son."
I looked at the guards. "Remove him."

"Clara! No! Please!" Julian screamed as the guards grabbed him by the arms, lifting him effortlessly off the floor. "You can't do this to me! I'm his father! I have rights!"
"You have nothing," I said as the doors shut on his desperate cries.
