"When her pregnant daughter's shirt fell off, the mother instantly died in silence. Horrific purple scars covered her back. But what chilled her even more was her daughter's next whisper: 'Mom, if I leave him, he says I won't be able to relax after the birth...'" PART 1: THE BRUISES The first bruise looked like a shadow. The second looked like a confession. At the VIP clinic, I was helping my nine-month pregnant daughter, Lily, prepare for her final ultrasound when her sweater slipped from her shoulders. My hands froze. Her back was covered in bruises. Dark purple. Black. Yellow around the edges where older injuries had begun to heal. Some were shaped like fingerprints. Others looked like the imprint of a boot. For a moment, I couldn't breathe. "Lily..." She spun around instantly and grabbed her sweater. Her face turned pale. "Mom, please." Her voice trembled. "Don't make a scene." A scene? My pregnant daughter was standing in one of the most expensive hospitals in the city, covered in bruises, and she was worried about making a scene. My stomach twisted. "Who did this?" "No one." "Lily." "I fell." I looked directly at the bruises. "Boots don't fall on people's ribs." Tears immediately filled her eyes. Then her entire body started shaking. The truth finally escaped. "It's Victor." The words barely rose above a whisper. My heart stopped. Victor Hale. Her husband. The hospital director. The man everyone admired. The man who smiled for magazine covers and charity galas. The man who was supposed to protect her. "He said if I ever leave him..." she whispered. "He'll make sure I don't wake up after my C-section." Silence filled the room. For one brief moment, rage exploded through me. Then it disappeared. Leaving behind something colder. Much colder. I helped her put on the hospital gown. Carefully tied the strings. Smoothed her hair. Then I smiled. "Let's go hear the baby's heartbeat, sweetheart." Lily looked at me strangely. Because she expected tears. She expected panic. What she saw instead frightened her even more. Absolute calm. And somewhere deep inside me, Victor Hale's life was already beginning to collapse.
