Chapter 2 - The Shadow at the Window

Inside the narrow servants’ quarters, the ticking of a small battery-operated clock on the nightstand sounded like a hammer against stone. Sophia pulled her daughter close to her chest, her chin resting against Emma’s soft curls, waiting for the sound of footfalls outside their locked door.
“Did he see you, Emma?” Sophia repeated, her voice barely a thread of breath. “Tell Mommy the truth. Did the hooded man look at you?”
Emma shook her head against her mother’s apron. “No. He was looking at Miss Vanessa. But when he walked away toward the iron gate, he stopped. He stepped on my shadow where the moonlight hit the bricks. He dropped something in the bushes, Mommy. A little black box.”
Sophia’s heart dropped into her stomach. Before she could ask another question, three slow, heavy knocks reverberated through the heavy oak door.
Sophia stiffened. She pushed Emma behind her back, reached for a brass candlestick on the dresser, and approached the door with a trembling hand.
“Who is it?”
“It’s Luca, Sophia,” a low, gravelly voice answered from the corridor. “Open up. Don’t make me use the master key.”
Sophia slid the brass lock back with a wet click. The door swung open to reveal Luca Marino. The old enforcer stood six-foot-two, his graying suit shoulder-broad, his right hand resting casually inside his jacket pocket. Behind him stood two armed guards in dark suits.
“Is Mr. Moretti going to kill us?” Sophia asked, her voice cracking despite her best efforts to remain calm. “She’s only four, Luca. She doesn’t know how this world works. Please—punish me, banish me, but let my daughter go.”
Luca looked down at the pale woman he had seen cleaning the estate’s chandeliers for over a decade. His weathered face softened, though his dark eyes remained sharp.
“Alessandro doesn’t execute children, Sophia,” Luca said quietly. “He wants to talk to you both. In his private study. Now.”
Ten minutes later, Sophia and Emma stood inside Alessandro Moretti’s private wing—a floor of the estate where few servants were ever permitted. The study smelled of old leather, pipe tobacco, and polished mahogany. High stained-glass windows cast long red and blue shadows across the floorboards.
Alessandro sat behind a massive desk. His black jacket was draped over the back of his chair, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing dark ink sleeves etched into his skin—symbols of the family he had led for twenty years.
Vanessa Hale sat in a leather armchair opposite him. Her expensive lace wedding veil lay crumpled on the floor like a dead bird. She was weeping silently, her face buried in her hands.
When the door clicked shut, Alessandro looked up.
“Sit down, Sophia,” Alessandro said calmly.
Sophia remained standing, clutching Emma’s small hand so tightly her knuckles turned white. “Mr. Moretti, I swear on my life, I didn’t tell Emma to speak. She sneaks out to get milk from the kitchen when she has bad dreams. I had no idea she saw Miss Vanessa—”
“I know you didn’t plan this, Sophia,” Alessandro interrupted gently. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the polished desk, looking directly at the little girl. “Emma. Come here.”
Emma looked at her mother. Sophia gave a tiny, hesitant nod.
The four-year-old took three steps forward until she was standing right beside the feared boss. Alessandro pulled a clean linen handkerchief from his pocket and gently wiped the tear tracks from her cheeks.
“You were very brave today,” Alessandro said quietly. “Do you know what happens to people in this house who tell lies?”
“They go away,” Emma whispered.
“That’s right,” Alessandro replied. “And do you know what happens to people who tell me the truth when everyone else is afraid?”
Emma shook her head.
Alessandro pulled a small gold key from his pocket and pressed it into her small palm. “They get protected. Forever.”
He looked across the desk at Vanessa, whose shoulders shook with violent sobs.
“Now, Vanessa,” Alessandro’s voice turned from velvet to iron. “My turn to ask questions. Who holds your brother?”
Vanessa flinched as if struck. She raised her bloodshot eyes, staring at Alessandro in absolute terror. “How... how did you know about Leo?”
“Because you love your brother more than life itself,” Alessandro said coldly. “And because a woman who is betraying me for power doesn’t cry when she hands over an envelope. She smiles. Who took him, Vanessa?”
Vanessa squeezed her eyes shut, a fresh wave of tears spilling over her lashes. “I don’t know his name! Three weeks ago, Leo disappeared from his college dorm in Boston. Then the messages started coming. Pictures of Leo tied to a chair... blood on his shirt. They said if I didn’t pass information about your shipping schedules and security codes, they would send him back to me in pieces.”
“Why didn’t you come to me?” Alessandro asked, his tone laced with deep, aching disappointment. “I would have flattened Boston to bring him back to you.”
“Because the man who delivered the threats knew things only someone in this house could know!” Vanessa cried out, her voice echoing off the high ceiling. “He knew where your guards stood at three in the morning! He knew the secret frequency of your radios! He told me that if I said a single word to you, the mole inside your inner circle would put a bullet in your head before I could finish the sentence!”
Silence fell over the room—dense, cold, and heavy as lead.
Sophia held her breath. Beside the desk, Emma reached down and picked up the small gold key Alessandro had given her, clutching it against her chest.
Alessandro slowly turned his head to look at Luca, who stood silent by the door.
“She’s telling the truth, boss,” Luca murmured softly. “Only four people have access to the radio frequencies and security shifts.”
Alessandro didn't need to ask for the names. He already knew them.
Himself.
Luca Marino.
The head of estate security, who had been with the family for thirty years.
Ryan Mercer.
Alessandro stood up slowly, drawing himself to his full, imposing height. He walked around the desk, standing before the tall stained-glass window overlooking the estate’s grand courtyard. Outside, guests were still climbing into their luxury sedans, confused and whispering, while Ryan Mercer stood near the main fountain, casually talking on his encrypted mobile phone.
“Ryan,” Alessandro muttered to himself, his dark eyes reflecting the crimson light of the window.
“Boss?” Luca asked, stepping forward. “Should I bring him in?”
“No,” Alessandro said softly. A cold, terrifying smile touched the corners of his lips—the smile of a predator who had finally spotted the wolf hiding in his sheepfold. “Ryan has served me for fifteen years. He thinks he is the smartest man in this city. If we strike now, his sub-captains will start a street war thinking I’ve gone mad.”
Alessandro turned back to Sophia, Vanessa, and little Emma.
“We let him believe his plan is still working,” Alessandro declared, his voice dropping into an octave of absolute command. “Vanessa, you will pretend you are broken, confined to your room in shame. Sophia, you and Emma will stay in my private quarters under Luca’s personal guard.”
“And what about Ryan?” Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling.

Alessandro looked out the window again, watching Ryan Mercer laugh with a senator near the gate.
“Ryan wants my empire,” Alessandro said quietly. “I’m going to let him think he’s about to take it. And when he reaches for the crown... I will cut off his hands.”
