Chapter 6 - The Trial of the Seven Captains

The air in the subterranean council chamber beneath the estate was cold and smelled of old stone and damp earth. This was the room where the Moretti family had conducted its most sacred, dark trials for over half a century.

A long stone table sat in the center of the room. Seated around it were the seven regional captains. At the head of the table sat Alessandro Moretti.

Bound to a stone pillar at the far end of the room was Ryan Mercer. His injuries had been bandaged by a family doctor, but his face was hollow, dark shadows framing his eyes.

Beside Alessandro sat Vanessa Hale and her brother Leo.

“Captains of the Eastern Seaboard,” Alessandro began, his voice deep and echoing off the stone walls. “We are here to settle three matters of honor.”

He stood up, pointing first to Vanessa.

“First: Vanessa Hale was accused of betraying this family on the day of our wedding. The evidence presented tonight proves she acted under extreme duress to save her brother’s life from a traitor inside our own walls. She is cleared of all dishonor.”

The seven captains nodded slowly in agreement. Old Captain Donato raised his hand. “The girl was a victim, boss. She has our respect.”

Alessandro turned his gaze to Leo. “Second: Leo Hale will receive full medical care and protection from our family. His college tuition and safety are guaranteed by the Moretti name.”

Leo bowed his head, tears of relief silently dripping onto his lap.

Finally, Alessandro’s dark eyes moved to Ryan Mercer.

The temperature in the stone chamber seemed to drop by ten degrees.

“Third: Ryan Mercer,” Alessandro spoke, his voice turning into liquid nitrogen. “For fifteen years, you sat at my father’s table. You ate his bread. You took his money. And while he called you a brother, you put poison in his glass.”

Ryan raised his head, a wild, manic grin stretching across his cracked lips.

“Do it then, Alessandro!” Ryan spat, his voice echoing wildly. “Kill me! Shoot me like a dog! You think you’ve won? I have offshore accounts! I have contacts in the FBI! The second I die, files will be released that will bring this whole organization crashing down around your ears!”

Alessandro didn't look angry. In fact, he pulled a small leather leather-bound tablet from his suit pocket and tossed it onto the stone table in front of Captain Donato.

“You mean these files, Ryan?” Alessandro asked smoothly.

Ryan’s grin froze.

“My tech team seized your primary server in Switzerland twenty minutes ago,” Alessandro explained calmly. “Every bribe, every contact, every offshore wire transfer you made over the last fifteen years... we erased them. You have no leverage, Ryan. You have no money. You have no network.”

Ryan’s face turned gray. The manic light in his eyes flickered and died, replaced by a deep, suffocating abyss of absolute realization. He had lost everything. Every calculation, every secret, every fifteen-year-old scheme had been unraveled in less than twelve hours.

“What is the judgment of the captains?” Alessandro asked, looking around the table.

One by one, the seven captains stood up.

“Death,” Donato said first. “Death,” the second captain agreed. “Death,” said the third.

Until all seven men stood in unanimous judgment.

Alessandro turned to Luca, who stood near the shadowed archway with a heavy leather bag.

“Take him to the docks,” Alessandro commanded softly. “Ensure he receives the same mercy he showed my father.”

As Luca’s men untied Ryan and dragged him screaming and kicking out of the subterranean chamber, Alessandro stood alone at the head of the table, breathing in the cold air.

The shadow that had hung over his family for fifteen years had finally been lifted.
