Chapter 3 - The Grain Silo at Pier 14

By midnight, a thick coastal fog had rolled over the harbor, swallowing the steel cranes and rusting freighter ships docked along the river.
Inside an abandoned grain silo at Pier 14, three miles from the Moretti estate, twenty-two-year-old Leo Hale hung by his wrists from an iron chain attached to the ceiling rafters. His bare feet barely touched the damp concrete floor. His face was bruised, his lip split, but his eyes were wide with pure terror as a man in a long dark coat dragged a steel chair across the floor.
The man pulled down his black wool face mask, revealing a sharp nose and cold, calculating blue eyes.
It was Marcus Mercer—Ryan Mercer’s thirty-year-old nephew and personal fixer.
“Your sister ruined everything today, kid,” Marcus said, lighting a cigarette and blowing a ring of gray smoke into the cold air. “Some little housemaid’s brat opened her mouth at the altar. The wedding is off.”
Leo coughed, spitting a mixture of blood and saliva onto the floor. “Then... then let me go. Vanessa didn't break... she didn't tell him...”
“She didn't have to,” Marcus sneered, flicking the ash onto Leo’s bare shoulder. “Alessandro is paranoid now. He canceled the ceremony, cleared the estate, and put the whole city on lockdown. My uncle spent fifteen years building a back door into the Moretti empire, and now we have to accelerate the timeline.”
Marcus pulled a silver silenced pistol from his shoulder holster and cocked the hammer with a sharp, metallic clack.
“Uncle Ryan gave the order ten minutes ago,” Marcus said nonchalantly. “No more leverage needed. We’re wiping the board clean tonight. Starting with you, then the housekeeper and her kid, and finally... Alessandro himself.”
Leo closed his eyes, praying silently as Marcus raised the barrel to his forehead.
BANG!
The heavy steel entrance door of the silo didn't just open—it blew inward off its hinges in a shower of sparks and concrete dust.
Before Marcus could turn his head, three heavy tactical rounds shattered his kneecaps and his right shoulder. Marcus screamed in agony, dropping his weapon and collapsing onto the filthy floor, writhing in his own blood.
Through the cloud of smoke walked Luca Marino, flanked by six men dressed in tactical night gear, equipped with suppressed assault rifles.
Behind them stepped Alessandro Moretti.
Alessandro walked with a slow, measured stride, his dark Italian wool coat swinging around his boots. He paid no attention to the five security guards who lay bleeding or unconscious across the concrete floor. He walked straight past Marcus, reached up with a heavy combat knife, and severed the iron chain holding Leo Hale.
Leo collapsed into Luca’s catch, gasping for air as the heavy ropes were cut from his bloodied wrists.
“Are... are you Alessandro?” Leo wheezed, clutching his chest.
“I am,” Alessandro said softly, placing a heavy, warm hand on the young man’s shoulder. “Your sister is safe. You are safe now.”
Alessandro turned around, his polished leather boots coming to a stop two inches from Marcus Mercer’s bleeding face. He reached down, grabbed Marcus by his hair, and hauled him up until their eyes were inches apart.
“Where is the black box, Marcus?” Alessandro asked softly.
Marcus spat blood against Alessandro’s lapel, grinning through stained teeth. “Go to hell, Moretti. My uncle is already moving. By sunrise, half your captains will pledge loyalty to him. You’re a dinosaur!”
Alessandro didn't flinch. He didn't even raise his voice.
“Luca,” Alessandro said calmly.
Luca stepped forward, pulling a small black plastic electronic box from his tactical vest—the very box little Emma had seen dropped in the bushes by the back gate two nights ago.
“Our tech team bypassed the encryption an hour ago, boss,” Luca reported. “It’s a local radio transmitter. It wasn't just sending security schedules. It was wired into the main gas lines running beneath the east wing of the estate.”
Alessandro’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure obsidian.
Ryan Mercer wasn't just trying to blackmail Vanessa or frame a rival family. He was planning to blow up the east wing of the Moretti estate during the post-wedding dinner—killing Alessandro, the senior captains, and half the city’s political elite in one swift explosion, leaving Ryan to step into the power vacuum as the tragic, surviving savior.
“Your uncle is very creative,” Alessandro whispered into Marcus’s ear. “But he forgot one detail.”
“What... what detail?” Marcus gasped, blood bubbling from his mouth.
Alessandro leaned closer, his voice dropping into a chilling whisper that made the blood run cold in Marcus’s veins.
“He thought I was resting on my father’s laurels. He forgot who taught me how to hunt.”
May you like
Alessandro let go of Marcus’s hair, letting the young man’s head hit the floor, and turned toward the exit.
“Lock him in the trunk,” Alessandro ordered his men. “We’re going back to the estate. It’s time to give Ryan Mercer the wedding reception he worked so hard to prepare.”
