Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House of Ashford

The heavy crystal chandelier above the ballroom seemed to spin as cold waves of pain rolled through my abdomen. I lay against the scatter of crushed gift wrap and shattered glass, pressing my hands over my belly to shield my daughter from the cold reality of the world she was about to enter.
Dr. Vance, my obstetrician, broke through the perimeter of stunned guests with a medical bag in hand, dropping to his knees beside me with an expression of cold, clinical fury.
“Pulse is elevated, and she’s experiencing acute abdominal trauma,” Dr. Vance announced, his voice slicing through the heavy silence of the room. He looked up at the two police officers standing behind my father. “Officer, place Mr. Ashford under immediate arrest for aggravated assault of a pregnant woman.”
Grant scoffed, stepping back with a dismissive wave of his hand. His arrogance was unshakeable, built on a lifetime of inherited wealth and the absolute belief that laws applied only to the common folk.
“Are you out of your mind?” Grant barked, turning to the two veteran officers. “This is a domestic dispute in my own home. My wife tripped over the gifts during a private argument. You have no jurisdiction here.”
“Step back, Mr. Ashford,” the lead officer commanded, his hand resting firmly on the grip of his holster as he advanced with silver handcuffs gleaming under the ballroom lights. “You were witnessed striking a pregnant woman by multiple people, and your own private security system has been recording every second of this gala via closed-circuit relay.”
Evelyn Ashford finally stood from her velvet chair, her face contorted in haughty outrage. She swept forward, her diamond bracelets jangling furiously.
“Do you know who we are?” Evelyn shrieked, pointing a rigid finger at the police officer. “We are the Ashfords! We fund the mayor’s re-election campaign! Arresting my son over a hysterical, barren woman throwing a tantrum is an absolute outrage! Marcus, tell them!”
She turned expectantly toward the man standing beside my father—Marcus Sterling, the Ashford family’s senior legal counsel, a man who had represented my husband’s corporate interests for a decade.
Marcus adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses. He didn't look at Evelyn. Instead, he stepped forward, pulling a thick manila folder from his leather briefcase and opening it under the chandelier’s glare.
“Mrs. Ashford,” Marcus said smoothly, his voice devoid of its usual sycophantic warmth. “For the past eight years, my primary firm has indeed represented the Ashford enterprise. However, my primary retainer has always been held by Richard Vance—my true employer and senior partner.”
Grant froze, his sneer faltering for a fraction of a second. “What... what are you talking about, Marcus? You work for me.”
“I work for the man who funded your startup, bought your first commercial building, and currently holds ninety-eight percent of the collateral on every asset bearing the Ashford name,” Marcus replied, handing a legal document directly to the lead police officer. “Furthermore, the corporate restructuring filings executed this morning officially strip Grant Ashford of all executive privileges, freezing his personal accounts under suspicion of felony embezzlement and fraudulent conveyance.”
My father knelt beside Dr. Vance, his hands gentle as he brushed a lock of damp hair from my forehead. Tears welled in his eyes, but his voice was iron-hard.

“You’re safe now, my darling,” my father whispered, kissing my cheek. “The nightmare is over.”
The click of handcuffs snapping around Grant’s wrists echoed sharply through the grand ballroom.
