Chapter 3 - The Emergency Sanctuary

The wail of the ambulance siren cut through the midnight air as we raced toward Meridian Memorial Hospital’s private executive wing.

Inside the back of the mobile trauma unit, Dr. Vance monitored my vital signs with intense concentration, while a neonatal specialist prepared an emergency incubator. The physical pain in my stomach was a dull, terrifying throb, but the contractions were growing closer together—triggered by the trauma of Grant’s assault.

“Breathe with me, sweetie,” my father murmured, holding my hand so tightly my knuckles turned white. “You’re going to make it. And so is my grandbaby.”

By the time the ambulance doors flew open at the hospital’s private bay, a team of nurses and specialists were already waiting. They transferred my gurney with military precision, wheeling me down brightly lit corridors into a sterile, high-tech delivery suite.

While the medical team worked to stabilize my blood pressure and halt the premature labor, Marcus Vance stood just outside the glass observation doors, managing the legal aftermath of the evening with ruthless efficiency.

Across the city, in the holding cells of the central precinct, Grant Ashford was discovering that his family’s name was no longer a magical shield against the law.

Kelsey, his twenty-two-year-old mistress, had initially followed them to the precinct, demanding entry and screaming that she was carrying the "rightful heir to the Ashford fortune." But when the desk sergeant informed her that Grant’s assets were frozen, his accounts seized, and his bail set at zero due to flight risk, Kelsey’s entire demeanor shifted.

Through the security feed monitored by my father’s private investigators, we watched her face pale in horror.

“Wait,” Kelsey stammered to the precinct officer, her voice dripping with sudden panic. “I’m not married to him! I don’t even live with him! This has nothing to do with me—I want to leave!”

“You’re listed as a primary beneficiary on three offshore corporate wire transfers initiated by Mr. Ashford forty-eight hours ago using embezzled subsidiary funds,” a federal investigator informed her smoothly, stepping out from the shadows of the precinct lobby. “That makes you a co-conspirator in federal wire fraud. Please take a seat, Ms. Vance—or whatever your real last name is.”

Back in the hospital suite, Dr. Vance stepped away from the monitors, offering a reassuring smile.

“The contractions are slowing down,” Dr. Vance reported, wiping his brow. “We’ve administered magnesium sulfate to protect the baby’s neurological development and stop the labor. She’s strong, and so is your daughter.”

I let out a long, shuddering breath, pressing my hand against my belly.

My daughter.

For years, Grant and his parents had tried to convince me that I was broken, that my body was a failure because I couldn't give them a son to carry on their meaningless name. They had blamed me for Grant's medical infertility, hiding behind lies and psychological cruelty while I endured painful treatments alone.

Now, the truth was out, the predators were caged, and my little girl was safe.
