Chapter 2 - The Echo of the Truth

The sterile white of the hospital room felt like a spotlight on Maya’s fragility. Sarah stood in the corner, her fingers tracing the rough texture of the privacy curtain. Her mind was a whirlwind of shattered memories. Every time Maya had complained of a "stomach bug" over the last few years, David had been the one to nurse her—with tea he made himself, with "medicine" he insisted she take behind closed doors.
"Mom," Maya’s voice was a jagged thread, pulling Sarah back to the present. The girl was hooked to an IV, her pale skin contrasting sharply with the harsh blue hospital gown. "He didn't just want me to be quiet. He wanted me to be... broken. He told me that if I ever told you, he would make you believe you were the one going insane."
Sarah felt a chill that had nothing to do with the air conditioning. She looked at her daughter—really looked at her—and saw the bruises hidden beneath the layers of hospital blankets. They weren't just physical; they were the marks of a systematic erasure of self.

"Why didn't you scream?" Sarah asked, her own voice barely a whisper.
"Because he was my father," Maya replied, her eyes welling up with tears that didn't fall. "And he told me that in this world, nobody listens to a girl who cries wolf. He built the cage, Mom. He made sure you were the one who held the key."
