Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

Victoria forced her breathing to remain steady, though her face had gone deathly pale under layers of designer makeup. She stepped forward through the parting crowd, her smile trembling at the edges like a cracked porcelain doll.
"Alejandro... darling," she breathed, her voice carrying a fragile, theatrical relief. "Where have you been? Everyone was looking for you. And... why is the housekeeping staff in the ballroom?"
She shot a venomous, fleeting glance down at me, her eyes flashing with a threat so cold it made me squeeze Alejandro’s hand tighter.
Alejandro didn't smile. He didn't open his arms to embrace her. He simply stopped ten feet away, his dark eyes locked onto hers with a pressure that felt physical—like a heavy weight pressing down on the entire room.
"The party is over, Victoria," Alejandro said. His voice echoed clearly off the marble pillars, easily carrying to every corner of the silent ballroom.
"What... what are you talking about?" Victoria laughed nervously, looking around at the sea of bewildered faces among the city’s elite. "Did something happen? Are you feeling unwell?"
"I was feeling quite unwell about an hour ago," Alejandro replied evenly. "In fact, I believe I was dying on the floor of my study. Poisoned, to be precise. A very rare, tasteless neurotoxin mixed into my 1982 Barolo."
Murmurs erupted through the crowd. The federal prosecutor who had been talking to Victoria moments earlier stepped back, his expression turning sharp and professional.
"Alejandro, surely you don't suspect—" Victoria began, her voice rising an octave, losing its smooth composure.
"I don't suspect anything, Victoria," Alejandro interrupted, raising his hand slightly. "Because suspicion requires doubt. And I have no doubt at all."
He nodded to Dante.
Dante stepped forward, clicked open the sleek black briefcase resting in his hands, and pressed a remote control linked to the massive projection screen concealed behind the ballroom’s velvet drapes.
The screen whirred to life.
Instantly, crisp, high-definition security footage filled the enormous display overhead. The entire room watched in stunned silence as the camera angle from the study played out in real time: Victoria stepping through the door in her emerald-green silk gown, pouring the wine, pulling the glass vial from her beaded clutch, and tipping the poison into the glass before walking away.
The video looped, playing the damning sequence a second time for anyone who had missed it.
Victoria stared up at the screen, her mouth opening and closing silently. All the color drained entirely from her face. The brilliant, untouchable queen of Manhattan had evaporated, leaving behind a cornered, terrified criminal.
"No," she whispered, shaking her head frantically. "No, that's... that's a fake. It's deepfake technology! Someone manipulated the security system—!"
"The security system is encrypted on a private military-grade server, Victoria," Alejandro said, taking a slow, deliberate step toward her. "The same server that records every transaction, every conversation, and every breath taken inside this estate. You forgot that vanity isn't the only thing I invest in. I invest in absolute control."
He stopped just two feet away from her, towering over her trembling frame.
"You married me for the Moretti name, the real estate holdings, and the keys to the empire," Alejandro continued, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying growl. "You thought you could slip a toxin into my glass, let the coroner rule it a sudden heart failure, and walk away clean. But you made one critical miscalculation."
Victoria looked up at him, her eyes wide with terror. "What... what miscalculation?"
Alejandro turned his gaze down toward me, resting his hand gently on the top of my pink rabbit backpack.
"You forgot that empires aren't just built by the people sitting at the mahogany desk," Alejandro said, his voice ringing with fierce, unyielding pride. "They are kept alive by the people who watch the floors, clean the corners, and care for the details everyone else is too arrogant to notice."
Before Victoria could speak another word, Dante stepped forward with a pair of heavy steel handcuffs.

"Victoria Moretti," Dante said coldly, reading her rights with clinical precision as he grabbed her wrists and locked the cuffs into place. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy, and domestic treason against the Moretti syndicate."
As Dante and the guards escorted a screaming, thrashing Victoria out through the grand double doors of the ballroom, the silence in the room remained unbroken—until the city’s elite realized the true hierarchy of power in the room had just been permanently rewritten.
