Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Empire

The sirens wailed outside, fading into the crisp morning air as federal agents and state police cordoned off the estate grounds.

Inside the subterranean bunker, the heavy steel hatch was finally unlocked from above. A beam of bright morning sunlight poured down the concrete steps, followed by the familiar, weary face of Dante Cruz.

"Boss," Dante called down anxiously. "Are you alright?"

"We're alive," Alejandro’s voice rumbled from the shadows.

He climbed out first, his left shoulder bandaged tightly, his suit jacket torn and stained with soot. Then he reached down, lifting me out of the bunker into the safety of the morning light, before helping Mama up behind us.

Stepping out into the shattered living room of our cottage, the extent of the assault was staggering. Bullet holes riddled the walls, and shattered glass covered the floor. But outside, lined up along the driveway, were three vans carrying captured syndicate mercenaries in handcuffs, being loaded into police custody by federal marshals.

A high-ranking official from the Department of Justice stepped up the front steps, removing his hat as he approached Alejandro.

" Mr. Moretti," the federal agent said, extending his hand. "We intercepted encrypted communications linking the Geneva council directly to last night’s assault—and to the poisoning of Prosecutor Vance. The entire international cell has been rounded up. Their network in North America is completely dismantled."

Alejandro shook the agent's hand firmly. "Make sure they never see daylight again."

"You have my word," the agent replied, before nodding respectfully toward Mama and me. "And... I believe these young ladies deserve a medal for their contributions to federal security."

Later that afternoon, the repairs on the cottage began. But we didn't stay in the cottage.

Alejandro insisted that we move into the main mansion permanently, not as staff, but as family. The east wing was remodeled into a secure, sunlit suite with a sprawling playroom for me and a fully equipped executive office for Mama.

That evening, as the sun set over the Hudson River, painting the sky in brilliant strokes of gold and crimson, Alejandro sat with me on the wide front porch of the estate.

He handed me a brand-new, custom-made pink rabbit backpack, perfectly identical to my old one, but lined with reinforced steel and containing a personalized medical kit designed specifically for my allergies.

"You saved my life twice now, Emma," Alejandro said softly, wrapping his strong arm around my shoulders as Mama walked out onto the porch carrying a tray of fresh tea and blueberry pancakes. "Once in the study, and once in the living room."

I smiled, pulling my new rabbit backpack close to my chest.

"That's what family is for, Mr. Moretti," I said.

Alejandro laughed—a warm, genuine sound that echoed across the vast, secure estate where the shadows could no longer reach us—and pulled us both into a tight, unbreakable embrace.
