Chapter 7 - The Shadows Stir

Three months later, the crisp spring air had melted the snow around the Westchester estate, bringing vibrant green lawns and blooming cherry blossoms to the private gardens overlooking the Hudson River.
Life in our new cottage had settled into a peaceful, unbelievable rhythm. Mama no longer woke up before dawn to scrub marble floors; instead, she spent her mornings reviewing executive logistics on a sleek laptop at our new oak dining table while drinking coffee from fine porcelain cups.
And I—now officially five years old—spent my afternoons drawing superhero pictures in my new bedroom, with a dedicated medical shelf holding spare EpiPens neatly organized by color and expiration date.
Yet, even in paradise, the underworld never truly sleeps.
It was a quiet Tuesday afternoon when Dante Cruz parked his black sedan outside our cottage and walked briskly up the front steps. He knocked twice before Mama opened the door, her expression instantly tightening with the protective instinct of a mother who had learned too much about the dangerous world surrounding her employers.
"Dante? Is something wrong?" Mama asked, stepping out onto the porch and pulling the door half-closed behind her.
"I need to speak with Alejandro," Dante said, his usual calm demeanor strained with an underlying urgency. "Or... actually, Martha, I need you both to come up to the main house. Immediately."
Inside the living room, I looked up from my coloring book as Alejandro stepped out of his private study, coatless, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He had been reviewing corporate audits when Dante arrived.
"What is it, Dante?" Alejandro asked, stepping onto the porch.
"The federal prosecutor handling Victoria’s indictment," Dante said, holding out a secure encrypted tablet. "Arthur Vance. He was found unresponsive in his Manhattan penthouse an hour ago."
Alejandro’s dark eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "Unresponsive? Is he dead?"
"Comatose," Dante corrected grimly. "Preliminary tox reports show traces of the exact same synthetic neurotoxin that was used in your wine glass three months ago. The federal lab says it’s untraceable unless you know what chemical markers to look for—markers that only a very specific faction of the European syndicate possesses."
A heavy, suffocating silence settled over the porch.
"Victoria didn't act alone," Alejandro murmured, the realization dawning with brutal clarity. "She wasn't just trying to seize my domestic assets for herself. She was a proxy for the syndicate elders in Geneva. They wanted control of the Moretti shipping lanes, and when Victoria failed to poison me directly, they decided to silence the prosecutor before he could uncover their financial web during her trial."
Mama gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. "My God... they're still coming for you."

Alejandro turned his gaze toward me, sitting quietly on the living room rug with my crayons, and a cold, lethal fury ignited deep within his chest. He looked back at Dante, his voice dropping into a register that commanded absolute obedience.
"Dante," Alejandro said, his jaw tightening into iron. "Bring every security asset online. Double the perimeter watch around this cottage. If they think they can wage war on my doorstep while my family is inside, they are about to learn why they should have let me die on that rug."
