Chapter 4 - The Ghost Named Paul

The revelation shattered the quiet atmosphere of the hospital floor.

Within hours, the small town of Riverbend became the center of a federal investigation. Agents from the FBI’s Child Abduction Rapid Deployment team set up a mobile command center in the hospital basement, while local police searched every square inch of the pale yellow house on Elm Street.

In the ICU room, Ruby—now officially identified as Clara Montgomery—slept peacefully for the first time in days, anchored by the presence of Aaron, who refused to leave her side.

Out in the hallway, Kelly stood with FBI Special Agent Marcus Croft, reviewing the evidence found in Gregory Vance's hidden room.

"Why keep her alive for seven years in a closet?" Kelly asked, leaning against the wall with her hands on her hips. "If he abducted her for extortion, why didn't he ever make a ransom demand?"

Agent Croft pulled up a digital file on his tablet. "Because the extortion wasn't about quick cash. Clara’s biological mother is Eleanor Montgomery, the sole heiress to Montgomery Pharmaceutical Global. Seven years ago, Eleanor’s father died, leaving a ninety-million-dollar trust fund that legally passes to her firstborn child on their eighth birthday."

Croft pointed to the calendar application on the tablet screen.

"Clara’s eighth birthday is in two weeks," Croft explained, his tone deadly serious. "Gregory Vance didn't just kidnap her. He was waiting until she turned eight. Under the terms of the trust, if the child is declared legally found and verified by DNA, the trustee—which Gregory secretly set up through a maze of offshore shell corporations—gains total administrative control over the ninety million dollars."

Kelly’s jaw tightened. "So he kept her hidden, drugged, and terrified until the day he could cash the check."

"Exactly," Croft nodded. "Leaving her in that house three days ago was part of his final exit strategy. He thought she would stay quiet and starve in the dark while he established his alibi in Canada. He didn't account for a seven-year-old girl finding a hidden phone and having the courage to dial 911."

"He's going to come back when he realizes she survived," Kelly stated. "He won't let ninety million dollars walk away."

"He's already realizing it," Croft said grimly. "The news of the 911 call hit the local media an hour ago. Gregory knows we have her."

At that moment, the lights in the hospital hallway flickered violently.

Outside, the storm reached its peak. A deafening crack of thunder shook the building, followed immediately by the harsh, mechanical groan of the hospital’s primary power grid failing.

The bright hallway lights plunged into pitch darkness. Seconds later, the dull red emergency backup lights kicked on, casting long, ominous shadows down the corridors.

Inside Ruby’s room, a sharp scream cut through the dark.

"AARON!"

Aaron scrambled up from his chair in the dim red light, drawing his emergency flashlight. "Ruby! I'm right here!"

"The monitors are down!" Dr. Vance shouted, rushing into the room with a manual resuscitator.

Before anyone could react, the heavy fire doors at the end of the pediatric corridor slammed open with a metallic crash. A thick cloud of white smoke began pouring out from the stairwell—a smoke grenade.

"FIRE ALARM! CLEAR THE FLOOR!" a panicked voice shouted down the hall.

Chaos erupted. Nurses and visitors scrambled through the smoke, shouting in confusion.

Kelly drew her service weapon, stepping into the hallway. "Croft! Secure the stairwells! It's a distraction!"

Through the swirling white haze, Kelly saw a tall figure dressed in dark paramedic scrubs, wearing a respirator mask, pushing a large laundry bin directly toward Ruby's room.

"POLICE! STOP RIGHT THERE!" Kelly yelled, raising her pistol.

The figure didn't stop. He whipped out a high-powered stun gun, firing the barbed prongs directly at Kelly. The electric shock hit her vest, sending a jolt through her frame that knocked her back against the wall.

The intruder kicked open the door to Ruby's room.

Aaron stood in front of the hospital bed, holding a heavy metal IV pole like a spear, his flashlight beam locked onto the intruder's face.

Through the clear visor of the respirator, two cold, dark eyes stared back at him.

"Move, caller," Gregory Vance hissed, his voice rasping through the filter. "She’s mine."
