Chapter 7 - The Falling Shadow

The flames spread with terrifying speed, hungrily devouring the dry, decayed timber of the old loading dock. Thick black smoke rolled into the air, blinding Kelly as she tried to establish a clear line of sight.
Gregory turned and began sprinting across the narrow metal catwalk that connected the upper mill to the lower river bridge, heading straight toward the idling getaway plane.
"He's getting away!" Aaron shouted through his coughs, shielding his face from the blistering heat of the fire.
"Not tonight," Kelly growled.
She scrambled up a rusted iron ladder attached to the side of the silo, ignoring the searing heat rising from below. Her boots pounded against the narrow steel grating as she chased Gregory through the smoke across the high catwalk.
Gregory looked back, his eyes widening in shock as he saw Kelly emerging from the smoke like a vengeful specter. He turned and raised his pistol, squeezing off three wild shots.
The bullets ricocheted off the steel girders with sharp, deafening PINGS. One bullet grazed Kelly’s shoulder, tearing through her tactical jacket, but she didn't slow down.
She leaped forward, diving flat across the slippery metal walkway and slamming her body into Gregory's legs.
They both crashed heavily onto the vibrating catwalk, forty feet above the roaring river below.
Gregory lost his grip on his pistol, watching it slip through the iron grate and plunge into the dark water below. He growled furiously, grabbing Kelly by the throat with his thick hands, pressing her down against the edge of the guardrail.
"You should have stayed in your office, officer!" Gregory snarled, his face twisted in psychotic rage, pressing his full weight down on her windpipe.
Kelly struggled for air, her vision beginning to spot with black dots. She reached down to her utility belt, her gloved fingers wrapping around the heavy steel handle of her emergency tactical flashlight.
With the last reserve of her strength, she swung the flashlight upward, slamming the heavy aluminum bezel directly into Gregory’s ear.
Gregory shrieked in agony, releasing her throat and staggering backward, clutching his bloody head.
Kelly sat up, gasping greedily for air, and drew her handcuffs. "Gregory Vance... you are under arrest!"
Gregory looked at her, then looked toward the runway where the plane was beginning to taxi away, scared off by the fires and sirens. His face twisted in ultimate, desperate defeat.
He backed away toward the broken section of the guardrail. "I will never go to prison!" he screamed.
He took a step backward into the empty air.
"NO!" Kelly yelled, reaching out to grab his sleeve.
Her fingers caught the fabric of his coat for a fraction of a second, but the wet leather slipped from her grip.
Gregory Vance plummeted forty feet down into the dark, churning currents of the swollen river below.
A heavy splash echoed through the night.
Agent Croft and his team burst onto the catwalk seconds later, their spotlights sweeping the dark river surface. The fast-moving current had already swept everything away into the mist.
Kelly stood up slowly, holding onto the steel rail, her heart hammering against her ribs. She looked down at her gloved hand, then looked back at Aaron, who was standing at the foot of the ladder, looking up at her with relief.
"Is it over?" Aaron called out over the roar of the fire engines arriving in the distance.
May you like
Kelly took a long, deep breath of the cool night air.
"It's over," she said quietly. "Now we take Clara home."
