Chapter 8 - The Arrival of Eleanor

The morning sun broke through the clouds for the first time in a week, bathing the town of Riverbend in soft, golden light.

At the private airfield on the south side of town, a sleek Gulfstream jet touched down on the runway. The staircase lowered, and a tall, elegant woman with striking blue eyes stepped out onto the tarmac.

Eleanor Montgomery looked exhausted, her face lined with seven years of unimaginable grief, but her posture was resolute.

Waiting near the hangar were Kelly, Aaron, and Dr. Vance, alongside a black town car provided by the county.

Eleanor walked rapidly across the asphalt, her hands trembling as she approached the group. She didn't look at the police badges or the official vehicles; her eyes were locked onto Kelly’s face.

"Is it true?" Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking with overwhelming emotion. "Is it really my Clara?"

Kelly reached into her pocket and pulled out the small silver locket they had recovered from Mr. Teddy, gently placing it into Eleanor’s trembling palm.

Eleanor gasped, her tears overflowing instantly as she popped open the locket and stared at the photo of herself holding her newborn baby seven years ago. She pressed the metal against her lips, weeping openly.

"She’s at the hospital," Kelly said softly, her own voice thick with emotion. "She’s safe. And she’s waiting for you."

Ten minutes later, the group stood outside room 304 in the pediatric wing of Riverbend General.

Inside, Ruby was sitting up in bed, wearing a soft yellow sweater. She was quietly drawing on her blue notepad with a green crayon, while Mr. Teddy sat proudly on her pillow.

Aaron gently opened the door. "Ruby? You have a visitor."

Ruby set her crayon down, looking toward the doorway.

Eleanor stepped slowly into the room. Her knees looked ready to buckle, but she forced herself to walk forward, stopping a few feet from the bed. She didn't want to frighten her daughter. She slowly dropped down onto her knees on the cold floor, bringing herself eye-level with the child.

"Hello, Clara," Eleanor whispered, tears streaming down her face.

Ruby tilted her head, staring at the woman's face. She looked at her bright blue eyes, then down at the silver locket Eleanor was holding out in her open hand.

"That's my picture," Ruby said softly.

"It's our picture, sweetie," Eleanor wept softly, reaching into her purse and pulling out a small, worn music box shaped like a wooden robin. She set it on the bedside table and turned the small brass key on the side.

A soft, sweet melody began to play—a gentle, soothing lullaby that filled the quiet room.

Ruby’s eyes widened. Her small hands began to tremble. A memory—deep, faint, and buried under seven years of dark closets and fear—suddenly broke through the fog of her mind like sunlight through water.

“Rock-a-bye, little robin... sweet dreams in your nest...”

Ruby whispered the words along with the music box, her small voice chiming in tune with the mechanical notes.

She looked at Eleanor, tears filling her eyes. "You... you're the song lady."

"I'm your mommy, Clara," Eleanor sobbed, extending her arms open wide. "I searched every single day. I never gave up on you. Never."

Ruby didn't hesitate. She scrambled off the hospital bed, dropping her crayons, and threw her tiny arms tightly around Eleanor’s neck, burying her face into her mother's shoulder.

Eleanor pulled her child into her chest, weeping uncontrollably, holding her as if she would never let go again.

Outside the glass window, Kelly and Aaron stood side by side, watching the reunion. Aaron wiped a tear from his cheek, while Kelly wrapped her arm around his shoulder, a bright, triumphant smile gracing her face.

"You answered that call, Aaron," Kelly whispered softly. "You saved her."

"We saved her," Aaron smiled.
