Chapter 6 - The Ambush at the Old Mill

Within twenty minutes, FBI digital analysts decrypted the flash drive found inside Mr. Teddy.
The drive contained Gregory Vance’s complete financial backup files, flight itineraries, and access codes to a private charter plane waiting at a small, disused airstrip near the abandoned Riverbend Grain Mill, three miles north of town.
Outside, the storm began to abate, leaving behind a thick, heavy fog that blanketed the valley.
A convoy of four unmarked black SUVs tore through the misty backroads toward the river. Inside the lead vehicle sat Kelly, Agent Croft, and Aaron, who had insisted on coming along as a civilian consultant because he knew the layout of the old mill from his years working as a county surveyor.
"The mill has three levels," Aaron explained, spreading a blueprint across his knees. "The main structure is reinforced concrete, but the old wooden loading dock on the south side is completely rotted out. If he tries to reach the runway, he has to cross the lower river bridge."
"We block the bridge, we trap him," Croft said, checking his tactical rifle. "We take him alive if possible. I want that bastard to face justice in a federal court."
The convoy cut its lights as they approached the tree line surrounding the sprawling, rust-covered complex of the old grain mill. The towering concrete silos stood like giant ghosts in the moonlight.
In the distance, the faint, low whine of a twin-engine turboprop plane could be heard idling on the dark runway.
"Team A, move left. Team B, secure the perimeter," Croft ordered over his tactical headset. "Summers, Whitfield, stay near the rear exit."
Kelly and Aaron crept through the tall wet grass toward the rotting wooden loading dock. The air smelled of wet rust and river mud.
Suddenly, a sharp metallic click echoed from above.
"LOOK OUT!" Aaron yelled, shoving Kelly violently to the side.
A heavy iron pulley block swung down from the upper gantry, smashing into the wooden deck where Kelly had been standing a split second before, sending splintered planks flying into the air.
From the dark shadow of the upper catwalk, Gregory Vance appeared, holding a flare gun in his left hand and a heavy semi-automatic pistol in his right.
"You arrogant little small-town cops!" Gregory roared, his voice echoing maniacally through the cavernous mill. "You think you can steal my ninety million dollars?! I built that girl! I gave her seven years of life!"
"You tortured a child, Vance!" Kelly shouted from behind a concrete pillar, raising her weapon. "Drop the gun! It's over!"
May you like
"It's never over!" Gregory screamed, firing the flare gun directly into an exposed fuel tank beside an old industrial generator on the dock.
An explosive burst of orange fire erupted instantly, lighting up the foggy night sky and cutting off Kelly and Aaron’s retreat.
