Chapter 6 - The Giant Awakens

The police officer turned toward Grace, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Miss Bennett," the officer said, his voice firm and professional. "Please place your hands behind your back."
"No!" Grace cried out, taking a step backward, her back hitting the wooden bookshelf. "I swear to God, I didn't do this! I was in my room! Mr. Whitman was with me!"
The officer paused, looking at Alexander. "Sir? Is this true? Were you with the suspect at twelve forty-two?"
Sophia let out a loud, mocking gasp. "Oh, please! Of course he’s going to defend her! They’re having an affair! She’s seducing him to cover up her crimes!"
Alexander didn't answer right away.
He stood in the center of the room, his tall frame completely motionless. His face was a mask of carved ice. His dark eyes moved slowly from Mrs. Holloway’s sweating face, to Sophia’s gleaming, malicious smile, and finally to the officer holding the handcuffs.
"Don't touch her," Alexander said softly.
The command was so quiet, so devoid of emotion, that it made the officer freeze in place.
"Mr. Whitman," the officer began, "the house manager found the stolen property—"
"I said," Alexander repeated, stepping directly between the police officer and Grace, "do not touch her."
"Alexander!" Sophia shouted, her voice shrill with anger. "Are you blind?! The maid is a thief! She tried to steal your family's priceless heirloom!"
Alexander slowly turned his gaze onto Mrs. Holloway.
The old house manager shifted her weight nervously, her eyes darting toward the door. "Mr. Whitman... I... I was only protecting your interests—"
"Mrs. Holloway," Alexander interrupted smoothly. "Where did you say you found that velvet bag?"
"Near the east hallway console, sir!" Mrs. Holloway stammered quickly. "Miss Bennett dropped it when she heard my footsteps!"
"I see," Alexander said.
He pulled a small, silver remote control from his trouser pocket.
Sophia frowned. "What is that?"
"When I bought this house five years ago," Alexander explained, his voice echoing calmly off the high ceilings, "I installed a secondary, military-grade thermal security network. It operates independently of the primary alarm system. It records twenty-four hours a day, saved directly to an encrypted off-site server in Zurich."
Mrs. Holloway’s face instantly lost every drop of color. She looked as if she were about to faint.
"No domestic staff member knows about this system," Alexander continued, pressing a button on the silver remote.
The eighty-inch television screen mounted above the fireplace clicked on.
A crisp, high-definition video feed began to play. The timestamp in the corner read: 12:35:12 AM.
The video showed the study. The room was dark, lit only by the moon outside.
A figure stepped into the room holding a master keycard and an access code sheet. It wasn't Grace.
It was Mrs. Holloway.
The screen showed Mrs. Holloway opening the floor safe, pulling out the black velvet pouch containing the diamond necklace, and handing it directly to Sophia’s lawyer, Arthur Vance, who was standing near the door.
The audio picked up Arthur Vance’s voice clearly through the speakers:
"Good job, Mrs. Holloway. Miss Vance has wired the fifty thousand dollars to your offshore account in the Caymans. Now, go plant the secondary bag near the maid's quarters and trip the silent manual override."
The video continued playing, showing Mrs. Holloway taking a fake velvet bag and walking out of the study toward the hallway.
The study fell into a dead, suffocating silence.
The police officers stared at the screen, then looked at Mrs. Holloway and Arthur Vance.
Sophia looked as if she had been struck by lightning. Her mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water, her face turning a violent, blotchy red. "That... that video is a fake! It's an AI manipulation! Arthur, tell them!"
Arthur Vance dropped his leather briefcase, his face as white as a sheet. "I... I have no comment."
Alexander turned to the police officers. His dark eyes were cold enough to shatter steel.
"Officers," Alexander said, gesturing toward Sophia, Arthur Vance, and Mrs. Holloway. "You are currently standing in the presence of three individuals engaged in felony breaking and entering, criminal conspiracy, corporate extortion, evidence tampering, and filing a false police report."
He stepped closer to the lead officer.
"I want them in handcuffs," Alexander growled. "Now."
The police officers didn't hesitate. Within three minutes, the metallic click of handcuffs echoed through the grand study three separate times.
Mrs. Holloway burst into hysterical tears, begging Alexander for mercy as she was led toward the door. Arthur Vance remained silent, his legal career ruined in an instant.
And Sophia... Sophia screamed and thrashed as the second officer pinned her arms behind her fur coat.
"You can't do this to me, Alexander!" Sophia shrieked, her voice echoing down the marble hallways. "I am a Whitman! I am the mother of your children!"
Alexander walked up to his ex-wife as she was being dragged through the doorway.
"You are nothing to my children," Alexander said, his voice flat and final. "And by tomorrow morning, my legal team will ensure you lose every penny of your remaining trust fund to pay for the damages of this night."
May you like
"You monster!" Sophia screamed as she was pushed out into the pouring rain. "You ruined my life for a maid!"
Alexander didn't answer. He turned his back on her, closing the heavy mahogany front doors of his mansion, shutting out the storm forever.
