Chapter 8 - The Court of Love

Six months later. Spring 2026.

The Cook County Family Court building in downtown Chicago was quiet on a Saturday morning.

In a private, sunlit judicial chamber on the fourth floor, Judge Sterling—a distinguished woman with silver hair and kind eyes—sat behind a massive oak desk, reviewing a thick stack of adoption and guardianship documents.

Sitting on the leather sofa across from the desk were Alexander and Grace.

Grace wore a simple, elegant ivory knee-length dress, her hair swept back into a soft knot. Alexander wore a dark blue suit, his arm wrapped securely around Grace’s waist.

And sitting on three small wooden chairs beside them were Carter, Thomas, and Finn, all three wearing matching miniature navy blazers and tiny red ties.

"Mr. and Mrs. Whitman," Judge Sterling spoke, looking over her gold-rimmed glasses with a warm smile. "I have reviewed the petition for adult adoption and maternal guardianship rights filed by your legal team."

Grace felt her hand tremble slightly inside Alexander’s grip.

Alexander squeezed her fingers encouragingly, looking at his sons.

"The psychological evaluations provided by Dr. Evans show an extraordinary recovery in all three boys," Judge Sterling continued, reading from the file. "Carter’s anxiety markers have dropped eighty percent. Thomas has shown complete resolution of night terrors. And Finn... Finn is currently testing in the top ninety-fifth percentile for verbal skills in his preschool class."

Judge Sterling set the file down and looked directly at the three little boys.

"Carter, Thomas, Finn," the judge asked gently. "Do you know why we are here today?"

Carter stood up from his small chair, pulling his red tie straight. "Yes, Your Honor. We're here to make Grace our official Mom so nobody can try to take her away again."

Thomas nodded vigorously, holding up his stuffed bear—which now wore a tiny matching red bowtie. "Bear agrees!"

Finn stepped forward, placing a hand-drawn picture on the judge's desk.

Judge Sterling picked up the drawing.

It was a drawing of five stick figures standing in a row, holding hands under a bright yellow sun. A big giant, a pretty lady in an ivory dress, and three small boys with cookware on their heads.

And this time, every single figure had a wide, happy smile.

Judge Sterling felt a tear touch her eye. She picked up her heavy wooden gavel, looked at Grace and Alexander, and struck the sound block with a sharp, final CLACK.

"By the authority vested in me by the State of Illinois," Judge Sterling declared softly, "I hereby approve the maternal petition. Grace Bennett Whitman is now the legal, official mother of Carter, Thomas, and Finn Whitman."

Grace burst into tears of pure, overwhelming joy, hiding her face in Alexander’s chest as he pulled her into a tight, fierce embrace, kissing her hair repeatedly.

The three boys cheered loudly, jumping onto the leather sofa and dog-piling onto Alexander and Grace, filling the quiet judicial chamber with wild, beautiful, unstoppable laughter.
