Chapter 7 - The Giant's Vow

The rain stopped just before dawn.

By six o'clock in the morning, the first rays of golden sunlight broke through the clouds, reflecting off the damp lawns of the Winnetka estate.

In the primary kitchen, the smell of freshly brewed coffee and sizzling butter filled the air.

Grace stood near the stove, flipping homemade gluten-free pancakes on a large iron griddle. She was exhausted, dark circles under her eyes from a night spent giving statements to Alexander’s legal team, but her hands were steady.

The kitchen door pushed open.

Alexander walked in. He had showered and changed into a clean white crisp shirt, though he wore no tie, no jacket, his collar unbuttoned at the neck.

He walked over to the counter and set down a thick blue leather binder.

"What is that?" Grace asked, setting her spatula down.

"That," Alexander said, sitting on a barstool across from her, "is the final court decree signed by Judge Sterling at five thirty this morning."

Grace held her breath. "And?"

"Sophia’s parental rights have been permanently terminated," Alexander announced softly. "A permanent restraining order has been issued. She is forbidden from coming within five miles of my sons, my house, or you for the rest of her life."

Grace let out a long, shaky breath, her hand covering her mouth as tears of pure relief welled in her eyes. "Oh, thank God... thank God."

"Also," Alexander added, a faint, warm smile touching his lips, "Mrs. Holloway is currently being held at the Cook County Jail without bail. The domestic agency has sent over four new candidates for the house manager position."

He looked at Grace, his expression softening completely.

"I told them to cancel the interviews," Alexander said.

Grace blinked. "Why?"

Alexander stood up, walking around the kitchen island until he stood directly in front of her. He reached out, taking both of her flour-dusted hands in his broad palms.

"Because I don't want a house manager, Grace," Alexander whispered, his voice deep and vibrating with a sincerity that made her heart skip a beat. "I want a home. And you are the only person who knows how to build one."

"Alexander..." Grace breathed, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"I know I was cold when you first met me," Alexander said, looking deep into her eyes. "I know I was a man who thought money could fix grief. But watching you with my boys... watching you stand up to Sophia last night... I realized that I don't ever want to face another day in this house without you by my side."

He leaned down, his forehead resting gently against hers.

"I love you, Grace Bennett," Alexander declared softly. "Not just because of what you did for my sons. But because of what you did for me."

Grace felt a warm, golden tear spill over her eyelashes. She smiled, her hands wrapping around his neck, pulling him down to her.

"I love you too, Alexander," she whispered.

Their lips met in a warm, gentle, desperate kiss that tasted of sweet relief, fresh morning air, and a future finally reclaimed from the dark.

"EWWW!"

A loud, collective voice squealed from the kitchen doorway.

Alexander and Grace broke apart, laughing.

Standing in the doorway were Carter, Thomas, and Finn, all three dressed in their pajamas, their eyes wide with comical shock.

Carter pointed a finger at his father. "Dad! You're kissing the dragon fighter!"

Thomas giggled, holding his stuffed bear up to cover its eyes. "Bear says don't look!"

Finn took three steps into the kitchen, a tiny blue paper dinosaur in his hand. He walked straight up to Alexander and Grace, looking up at them with bright, clear eyes.

"Dad?" Finn said, his voice quiet but perfectly formed.

Alexander dropped to his knees, his eyes shining with emotion. "Yes, Finn?"

"Is Grace staying forever?" Finn asked.

May you like

Alexander looked up at Grace, his hand reaching out to take hers, squeezing it tightly.

"Yes, Finn," Alexander said, his voice thick with joy. "Grace is staying forever."
