Chapter 9 - The Home We Built

One year later. Summer 2026.
The back lawn of the Winnetka estate looked like a paradise.
Long white tables decorated with sunflowers and yellow ribbons were set up near the sweeping stone patio overlooking the blue waters of Lake Michigan. Seventy guests—genuine friends, local community leaders, and Grace’s former colleagues from the community center—were gathered under the warm afternoon sun.
Laughter and music drifted through the air.
In the center of the lawn, a massive bouncy castle shaped like a medieval castle stood inflated, where Carter, Thomas, and Finn were currently jumping up and down, wearing paper crowns and screaming with pure delight.
Grace stood on the stone patio, holding a glass of iced tea, watching her sons play.
She looked radiant. Her skin was glowing, her eyes filled with a deep, unshakeable peace that no amount of money could ever buy.
A pair of strong arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind.
Alexander pulled her against his chest, resting his chin on her shoulder, smelling the clean vanilla fragrance of her hair.
"What are you thinking about, Mrs. Whitman?" Alexander whispered into her ear.
Grace leaned back into his warm chest, looking out at the grand mansion behind them.
The front windows were open, letting the cool lake breeze sweep through the rooms. Finger-paintings lined the hallways. A set of toy blocks sat proudly on the grand foyer table. The cold, polished museum of marble and steel was gone forever.
In its place was a home.
"I was thinking," Grace said softly, turning in his arms to look up into his dark, loving eyes, "about the night I found three little boys hiding under a pillow mountain."
"And?" Alexander asked, a soft, tender smile gracing his handsome face.

"And I was thinking," Grace said, reaching up to gently trace his jawline, "that the giant turned out to be pretty nice after all."
Alexander laughed—a rich, deep, joyful sound that echoed across the sunny lawn—and pulled his wife into a deep, passionate kiss as their three sons cheered from the top of the bouncy castle, their wild, messy laughter rising high into the clear blue summer sky.
