Chapter 4 - Unraveling the Paper Trail
By sunrise, Evelyn was resting comfortably in a private suite at the university medical center under twenty-four-hour police protection. Elena stood in the hospital’s conference room alongside Lead Forensic Investigator Marcus Vance and Special Agent Sarah Chen from the Financial Crimes Division.
Spread across the large oak table were dozens of bank statements, property transfer deeds, and corporate filings that State Police had seized during the midnight search of Julian’s home study.
“It’s far worse than simple extortion,” Agent Chen reported, sliding a thick blue binder toward Elena. “Three months ago, Julian established a shell company registered in Delaware under the name E.V. Holding Enterprises LLC. Using a forged power of attorney, he transferred your mother’s primary residence, her lake house in Michigan, and her $2.4 million investment portfolio directly into that entity.”
Elena turned the pages, her eyes scanning the forged signatures. “Look at the handwriting on this deed transfer. The signature is shaky, clearly traced from an older signature card. Who notarized this?”
“A private notary named Richard Sterling,” Agent Chen answered. “He runs a shady estate-planning office on the edge of town. We pulled his records an hour ago. He’s received over fifty thousand dollars in ‘consulting fees’ from Julian’s personal account over the last six months.”
“A crooked notary,” Elena muttered, a cold smile touching her lips. “He signed off on an involuntary asset transfer without the grantor present. That’s notary fraud, racketeering, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny.”
Marcus Vance leaned forward, tapping a document. “And here’s the trigger for their physical violence. Two weeks ago, your mother’s primary bank flagged a suspicious wire transfer request for six hundred thousand dollars bound for an offshore account in the Cayman Islands. The bank demanded an in-person verification with video identification. That’s when the beatings and the rope restraints began. They were trying to break her spirit until she would sit in front of a webcam and read a script.”
Elena gripped the edge of the table, her knuckles turning white. “They didn’t just abuse her. They tortured her for money.”

“The case is ironclad, Elena,” Chen said. “But Julian’s legal team is already moving. He just retained Victor Sterling—no relation to the notary, but the most aggressive criminal defense attorney in the state. They’re planning to file for immediate bail and challenge the validity of the search warrant.”
Elena stood up, buttoning her tailored suit jacket. “Let them try. I’m stepping in as special co-prosecutor on this case. Victor Sterling has never faced me in a courtroom. He’s about to learn what happens when you defend monsters.”
