Chapter 10 - A Sanctuary Restored

Eighteen months later.

The summer afternoon sun glittered across the calm, blue waters of Lake Michigan. The breeze rustled softly through the pine trees surrounding the restored family cabin—the very home Julian had tried to steal and sell off.

On the wide wooden porch overlooking the water, Evelyn sat comfortably in a cushioned rocking chair, wearing a light cardigan. Her cheeks had regained their rosy warmth, her weight had fully returned, and her eyes were bright with peace.

Beside her sat Elena, sipping a cup of fresh iced tea while reading through a book.

A gentle breeze blew across the deck, carrying the scent of sweet pine and freshwater. There were no closed curtains here, no hidden bruises, and no fear.

Evelyn reached out, placing her hand gently over Elena’s. The scars around her wrists had faded into faint, barely visible silver lines—reminders of a battle won, not a defeat suffered.

“Elena?” Evelyn whispered softly.

Elena looked up from her book, smiling warmly at her mother. “Yes, Mom?”

“I was just thinking about that night,” Evelyn said, her voice filled with deep, unwavering love. “The night you came through the front door for my birthday. I thought my life was over. I thought I would die in that dark house.”

Elena took her mother’s hand, holding it tight in both of hers. “Your life was never over, Mom. It was just waiting for justice.”

Evelyn smiled, looking out toward the sun setting over the sparkling lake, painting the sky in vibrant shades of gold and crimson.

“We won, didn’t we?” Evelyn said softly.

“Yes, Mom,” Elena replied, her heart swelling with absolute contentment. “We won. And you are safe forever.”
