Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The jury deliberated for less than ninety minutes.
When Judge Gomez reconvened the court, the foreperson stood up, reading the verdict from the official paperwork.
“On count one, Aggravated Elder Abuse and Torture—Guilty. On count two, Kidnapping through Unlawful Restraint—Guilty. On count three, Grand Larceny in the First Degree—Guilty. On count four, Forgery and Criminal Conspiracy—Guilty.”
Guilty on all twenty-four counts.
Julian sat motionless, his face drained of all color as the clerk read the continuous string of convictions.
Judge Gomez ordered Julian to stand for sentencing immediately, waiving the standard waiting period due to the extraordinary severity of the crimes.
“Julian Vance,” Judge Gomez declared, her voice heavy with contempt. “You exploited the sanctity of family and the vulnerability of your own mother for pure, unadulterated greed. Your actions were monstrous, cruel, and completely devoid of human empathy.”
She slammed her hand down on the desk.

“I sentence you to forty-five years in state prison without the possibility of parole. Furthermore, under federal asset forfeiture laws, every single asset held in your name, including your private bank accounts, vehicles, and real estate, is hereby seized and restored entirely to your mother, Evelyn Vance.”
The courtroom erupted into applause. Julian was immediately handcuffed by court officers and marched out through the side door, his life reduced to prison walls and total disgrace.
