Chapter 5 - Counterstrike

The following afternoon, the county courthouse was swarming with news crews. Word had leaked to the press that the Assistant Attorney General’s own family had been arrested in a massive elder abuse and financial fraud sting.

In Courtroom 4B, Julian and Chloe sat at the defense table dressed in orange jail jumpsuits, handcuffed at the waist. Sitting beside them was Victor Sterling, a tall, slick attorney with silver hair and a reputation for tearing witnesses apart.

“Your Honor,” Sterling began, standing up and projecting his voice smoothly toward the bench. “My clients are victims of a gross overreach of state authority driven by personal family malice. Elena Vance has weaponized her position in the Attorney General’s office to settle a bitter inheritance dispute. The allegations of abuse are completely fabricated—injuries sustained by an elderly woman suffering from severe, documented dementia who frequently falls down.”

The judge, Honorable Maria Gomez, frowned. “Mr. Sterling, the medical reports from the hospital indicate severe contusions and ligature marks consistent with binding.”

“Self-inflicted or accidental, Your Honor,” Sterling countered smoothly, turning to glance back at Elena with a patronizing smirk. “My clients have dedicated their lives to caring for Mrs. Vance while Ms. Elena Vance was absent, focusing on her own career ambitions. We move for immediate dismissal of all charges and the release of my clients on personal recognizance.”

Elena stood up slowly from the prosecution table. She didn’t raise her voice. She didn’t need to.

“Your Honor,” Elena declared, her tone echoing with absolute authority. “The defense’s narrative is not only absurd; it is a brazen lie designed to cover up systemic physical torture and financial plunder.”

She walked to the podium and placed a digital tablet onto the evidence projector. Instantly, the massive monitors around the courtroom flared to life.

High-definition medical photos filled the screens: the purple rope burns around Evelyn’s wrists, the heavy contusions across her ribcage, and side-by-side forensic analysis showing the marks matched the exact width and weave of the nylon rope seized from Julian’s basement.

A collective gasp echoed through the gallery. Chloe flinched, pulling her gaze away from the monitors, while Julian stared straight ahead, his jaw tight.

“Furthermore,” Elena continued, pulling up a second set of documents, “we have secured bank transaction records showing that hours after these injuries were inflicted, Mr. Julian Vance attempted to transfer six hundred thousand dollars to an offshore account in Grand Cayman. We also have audio recordings retrieved from the home’s smart security system—which Mr. Vance forgot to disable—wherein he can be heard telling my mother, and I quote: ‘If you don’t sign the estate transfer, you won’t get food or water for three days.’”

The courtroom went dead silent. Judge Gomez’s face hardened into stone.

“In light of the extreme violence, financial flight risk, and ongoing threat to the victim,” Elena concluded, “the State requests that bail be denied entirely for both defendants.”

Judge Gomez didn’t hesitate. She slammed her gavel down with a crack that resonated like a gunshot.

“Bail is denied. Defendants will remain in custody pending trial. Court is adjourned.”
