Chapter 3 - The Weight of the World

Outside on the stone steps of Madison Avenue, the spring wind whipped Karen’s worn cotton jacket around her legs as she stared down at the cardboard box holding her meager belongings: a plastic coffee mug, a notebook with her sister’s college schedule, a pack of pens, and her spare pair of flats.

She had done the math in her head three times, and every time, the numbers looked like a disaster.

No job. Rent due in five days. Her mother’s medical bills piling up at St. Jude’s Hospital. And the final notice from the electric company sitting on her kitchen counter in Queens.

“You’re fired,” Brenda’s voice echoed in her ears.

Karen squeezed her eyes shut, fighting back the hot, frustrated sting of tears. She had worked too hard, stayed too late, and bitten her tongue too many times to let it all collapse because she showed basic human decency to a terrified little girl.

“Excuse me, Miss Seymour?”

Karen opened her eyes. Standing before her was a man in an immaculate navy suit, holding a silver-trimmed fountain pen. Behind him stood two towering security guards who looked like they could bench-press a car.

“Yes?” Karen asked defensively, pulling her cardboard box closer to her chest.

“Mr. Lorenzo Rossi requests your presence inside.”

Karen stared at him, her breath catching in her throat. “Lorenzo Rossi? The… the man from the store?”

“The same,” the man replied politely, gesturing toward the open double doors of Maison Delacour. “Please. He insists.”

Karen’s mind raced. The tabloids called men like Lorenzo Rossi monsters—ruthless businessmen with ties to underground syndicates, men who settled debts with blood and vanished people into the night. But she had also seen the way he held little Mia, the raw, aching terror in his eyes when he thought his daughter was hurt.

Taking a deep breath, Karen lifted her box and walked back inside.

The boutique was completely empty of customers. The wealthy shoppers had fled like ghosts, leaving behind only the security team and the trembling manager standing near the counter with her head bowed.

In the center of the polished marble floor stood Lorenzo Rossi.

He was kneeling again, but this time he was speaking softly to Mia, who was holding the charcoal cashmere scarf Karen had draped over her shoulders earlier. When the little girl saw Karen walk in, her face brightened instantly.

“Karen!” Mia called out, slipping away from her father and running across the floor to grab the hem of Karen’s coat.

Karen froze, looking down at the little girl, then up at the formidable mafia billionaire standing just a few feet away.

Lorenzo rose to his full height. His dark, intense gaze locked onto Karen, and for a long moment, neither of them spoke. The air between them crackled with an unspoken tension, charged with power, gratitude, and a dangerous, shifting dynamic that neither of them had expected.
