Chapter 4 - The Dangerous Offer

“You didn’t run,” Lorenzo said, his voice deep, smooth, and carrying an unmistakable Italian cadence.
Karen adjusted her grip on the cardboard box, her chin lifting with a spark of stubborn pride. “I had nowhere to run to. And besides, I wanted to make sure she was all right.”
Lorenzo’s lips curved into the faintest hint of a smile—not a warm smile, but something sharp and approving, like a general acknowledging a brave soldier on the battlefield.
He took a step closer, stopping just inches away. Up close, Karen could see the faint scar curving along his jawline and the intense, magnetic gravity of his dark eyes.
“You lost your job because of her,” Lorenzo noted, his tone steady.
“I lost my job because Mrs. Wallace is a miserable tyrant,” Karen corrected instantly, not backing down even though her heart was hammering against her ribs. “Helping Mia wasn’t a mistake. I’d do it again.”
Lorenzo looked down at his daughter, who was still clutching the expensive cashmere scarf like a security blanket. Then he looked back at Karen, his expression turning calculating.
“My daughter, Mia, is on the autism spectrum,” Lorenzo explained quietly, choosing his words with deliberate care. “She is brilliant, sensitive, and completely overwhelmed by the chaotic world we live in. Most people look at her meltdowns and see a nuisance. You looked at her and saw a human being.”
Karen swallowed. “She was scared. Anyone with eyes could see that.”
“Most people in this city are blind,” Lorenzo said flatly. He reached into the inside pocket of his tailored jacket and pulled out a heavy, gold-embossed business card, extending it toward her. “I don’t like owing debts, Miss Seymour. Especially not debts related to my family.”
Karen looked at the card, then up at his face. “I don’t want your charity, Mr. Rossi.”
“It’s not charity,” Lorenzo replied, his voice dropping lower, sending a strange shiver down Karen’s spine. “It’s a business proposal. My household staff needs someone who understands Mia, someone with patience, courage, and a backbone of steel. My current private tutors and nannies keep quitting because they can't handle her episodes, or because they’re too terrified of me.”
He paused, letting the weight of his words settle over the quiet store.
“I am offering you a position as Mia’s personal guardian and developmental coordinator. Salary: five hundred thousand dollars a year. Full medical coverage for your family, your mother’s hospital debt cleared by tonight, and your sister’s tuition paid in full through graduation.”
Karen stopped breathing.
Five hundred thousand dollars. Her mother’s medical debt wiped clean. Her sister’s future secured. It was an impossible dream—a fairy tale offered by a dark, dangerous prince.
“And what’s the catch?” Karen asked, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to sound composed.
Lorenzo’s eyes locked onto hers, holding her gaze with terrifying intensity.
“The catch, Karen, is that once you step into my world, you belong to it. My enemies will look at you. They will try to use you to get to me. You will be walking into a war zone disguised as high society.”

He stepped closer, his presence overwhelming her senses with the scent of cedar, expensive leather, and pure power.
“So tell me,” Lorenzo murmured softly, “do you have the courage to survive it?”
