Chapter 6 - Inside the Fortress

The Rossi estate in Greenwich, Connecticut, was less of a home and more of a nineteenth-century fortress wrapped in modern wealth. Surrounded by iron gates, dense pine forests, and private security checkpoints, the sprawling limestone mansion overlooked the grey, churning waters of Long Island Sound.
When the black armored Maybach rolled up the circular cobblestone driveway, Karen pressed her face against the tinted glass, taking in the sheer scale of the estate.
“You don't have to be afraid,” Lorenzo said softly from across the leather interior. He was sitting beside Mia, who had fallen asleep with her head resting on his shoulder, still clutching her cashmere scarf.
“I’m not afraid,” Karen replied, though her pulse fluttered nervously. “Just… adjusting.”
“This is your home now, too,” Lorenzo said firmly. “My staff has already prepared the master guest suite on the second floor, adjacent to Mia’s nursery. Anything you need—books, clothes, medical supplies for your family—just tell Marcus, and it will be delivered within the hour.”
As the car came to a smooth halt, the heavy oak doors of the mansion swung open. A row of household staff—butlers in black waistcoats, housekeepers in neat grey dresses, and security operatives in suits—stood lined up in the grand foyer, waiting to greet them.
Karen stepped out of the vehicle, feeling like royalty entering a royal court.
“Welcome to the estate, Ms. Seymour,” said an older, dignified man with silver hair and sharp, kind eyes. He stepped forward with a polite nod. “I am Arthur, the head butler. On behalf of everyone here, we are honored to have you.”
Before Karen could respond, a frantic voice echoed from the grand staircase.
“Lorenzo! Thank God you’re back! The board members from Zurich are calling on the secure line, and—_”
A striking woman in a tailored emerald dress rushed down the marble stairs. Her dark hair was styled into an immaculate chignon, and her sharp green eyes scanned the foyer before landing directly on Karen.
Elena Vance—socialite, high-society darling, and the woman the New York tabloids constantly paired with Lorenzo Rossi in speculative engagement articles.
Elena stopped dead in her tracks, her gaze sweeping over Karen’s simple cotton jacket and worn boots with undisguised contempt.
“Who is this?” Elena demanded, turning her sharp glare toward Lorenzo as he gently carried a sleeping Mia into the foyer. “Lorenzo, why is there a retail clerk standing in your hallway?”
The air in the foyer instantly turned glacial.
Lorenzo handed Mia over to a trusted nanny with a whispered instruction before turning slowly to face Elena. His expression hardened into a mask of pure ice.

“Karen is not a retail clerk, Elena,” Lorenzo said, his voice cutting like a razor. “She is Mia’s new guardian and developmental director. And this is my home. You will address her with respect, or you won't be entering these doors ever again.”
Elena’s face flushed with shock and deep humiliation. She glared at Karen with sheer venom, realizing in a single moment that the power dynamic in the Rossi household had just shifted permanently.
