Chapter 4 - The Shadows of the System

By noon, the news had begun to ripple through the extended family and local channels. My phone buzzed incessantly with missed calls from aunts, uncles, and family friends who had believed Gloria and Walt’s pristine public facade. I ignored every single one of them. My sole focus was Lizzy.
The hospital discharge team cleared her for temporary placement under my direct emergency custody, provided we enrolled her in a specialized pediatric trauma and nutrition program.
Adam arrived at the hospital around noon, bringing a change of clothes for me, a fresh stuffed bear for Lizzy, and a look of fierce, protective determination in his eyes.
“I cleared my schedule for the next two weeks,” Adam said, wrapping his arms around me in the hallway outside Lizzy’s room. “Whatever she needs, whatever you need, I’m right here.”
“Thank you,” I breathed, burying my face in his shoulder. For years, my parents had tried to drive a wedge between Adam and me, whispering to anyone who would listen that my husband was ‘unstable’ or ‘unreliable.’ They had isolated me, just as they had isolated Lizzy.
As we walked back into the room, Lizzy was awake, sitting up against the pillows and slowly sipping apple juice. She looked up as the door opened, her eyes wide with a fragile, hesitant hope.
“Auntie Nat?” she whispered.
“I’m right here, sweetie,” I said, sitting on the edge of the mattress.
“Are we going back to the dark room?”
My heart broke all over again. I took her small, cold hand in both of mine, squeezing gently.
“Never, Lizzy. Never again. You’re coming home with me and Uncle Adam. We have a big room waiting for you, and nobody is ever going to lock a door on you again.”
She let out a long, shaky breath, as if a heavy stone had finally been lifted from her chest. “Can I bring my bear?”
May you like
“You can bring as many bears as you want,” Adam smiled, placing the new plush toy on her lap.
That afternoon, we packed her meager belongings from the hospital bassinet, signed the final discharge paperwork, and drove away from the institution that had marked the beginning of her nightmare.
