Chapter 10 - A Bright Horizon

One year after that terrifying midnight phone call, our family gathered in the backyard of Ian’s new home to celebrate Lizzy’s eighth birthday.

The lawn was strung with colorful paper lanterns, a massive chocolate birthday cake sat proudly on the picnic table, and half a dozen of Lizzy’s new school classmates ran around playing tag while our golden retriever barked happily in pursuit.

I stood by the patio grill with Adam and Ian, watching Lizzy blow out the glowing candles on her cake with a single, powerful breath.

The entire crowd erupted into cheers and applause.

Ian wiped a stray tear from his eye, smiling broadly as he looked at his daughter. “She’s running in the school track team next month,” he said proudly. “Can you believe it? First place in her heat last week.”

“I told you she was strong,” I smiled, bumping my glass of sparkling cider against his.

Later that evening, after the guests had gone and the stars filled the Colorado sky like a blanket of glittering diamonds, Lizzy walked over to where I was folding up the patio chairs.

She held up a small, neatly folded piece of construction paper and handed it to me.

Inside, written in careful, confident second-grade handwriting, were the words: To Auntie Nat. Thank you for answering the phone in the dark. You are my hero. I love you forever.

I felt a warm tear slip down my cheek—not of sorrow, but of profound, overwhelming gratitude. I knelt down, pulled my niece into my arms, and held her close against my heart.

“I love you too, sweet pea,” I whispered, looking up at the bright, open horizon and the beautiful, safe future stretching out before us. “Always and forever.”
