Chapter 9 - The Trial and Verdict
The final trial in the summer of 2026 was swift and decisive.
Faced with overwhelming forensic evidence, uncooperative co-conspirators, and damning financial paper trails, my parents’ defense attorneys offered no counter-testimony. Instead, they focused entirely on pleading for leniency based on age and health—a plea that fell on deaf ears.
On a bright Tuesday afternoon in July, the jury returned with their verdict.
“In the case of State of Colorado versus Gloria and Walter Evans,” the jury foreperson announced clearly, “on all counts of aggravated child abuse, unlawful imprisonment, and financial fraud: Guilty.”
Judge Harrison didn't hesitate when handing down the sentence.
“The actions committed by Gloria and Walter Evans represent a calculated, systematic betrayal of the most sacred trust known to human society: the protection and care of an innocent child,” Judge Harrison declared, his voice ringing through the silent courtroom. “You traded her safety for luxury, and her health for greed. May you spend every day of your remaining years reflecting on the darkness you created.”
Gloria Evans was sentenced to twenty-eight years in federal and state penitentiaries without the possibility of early parole.
